Firefighters' truck hit at accident scene

110404wreckon74
The remains of a totalled 1989 Mercury Topaz came to rest on the inside shoulder of the westbound lanes of U.S. 23/74 between Exits 85 and 83 Friday (Oct. 29) after the car collided with a Sylva Fire Department truck, said Sgt. Greg Christopher of the N.C. Highway Patrol. The Mercury's driver,  George Martin Bauman, 50, of Newton, was charged with failure to reduce speed and failure to move over for an emergency vehicle after he collided with the back of the fire department's truck at about 9:30 a.m., Christopher said. Sylva firefighters were on the scene after an earlier wreck near Exit 83 stalled traffic, said Chief Mike Beck. Bauman was taken to Harris Regional Hospital, but had no serious injuries, Christopher said. – Herald photo by Derek Hodges
