Alexander leads Rams past Smoky Mountain

Caleb Alexander scored three goals leading two-time defending state soccer champion Roberson to a 4-1 victory over Smoky Mountain on Oct. 25 at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

"We did not play well the first half of the first half," Coach Dolphus Brown said. "The first three goals were very similar in that we got beat off the dribble."

Alexander opened the scoring from six yards out three minutes into the game.

"He dribbled by two or three players, and we couldn't contain him," Brown said.

Kerwin Dieudonne put the Rams up 2-0 at the 15-minute mark.

"We couldn't stop him on the dribble, and we let him shoot with his right foot," the coach said.

Alexander increased the margin to 3-0 at the midpoint of the first half.

"He again just went around people," the coach said. "We stabbed and couldn't contain him. He made a nice move and shot it from 12 yards."

The Mustangs cut the gap to 3-1 at the 22-minute mark as P.J. Arkansas scored with an assist from Coleman Corzine.

"The ball was played into P.J. from Coleman," Brown said. "P.J. just got free with it. He was open on the left side and pushed it past the keeper from 14 yards out."

The Arkansas goal had an effect on how the team played the rest of the game, according to Brown.

"We settled down and started playing some good soccer," he said. "We played one of our best games from that point on."

The only goal of the second half came with eight minutes to play as Alexander converted a penalty kick following a foul in the box.

Roberson had an 18-9 advantage in shots. Bryan Newbold made nine saves for the Mustangs, and Roberson's Patrick Browne had six.

The Rams won the JV game 4-1. John-Luke McCord scored SM's goal.
