The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Sallie Bumgarner

Sallie F. Bumgarner, 73, of Locust Creek Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, in Skyland Care Center after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Cecil Frady officiating. Private burial was at Bumgarner Family Cemetery, Locust Creek. Pallbearers were Weaver Scott, Ed Scott, L.C. Bumgarner, Danny Keever, Sam Deitz and Jimmy Claybo.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, a 1952 graduate of Webster High School where she was class secretary, member of the Beta Club 3 and 4 and was also treasurer of the Beta Club. She retired from Skyland Textile, was a member of Lovedale Baptist Church and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Hattie Worley Bumgarner. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Alvin Bumgarner.

Surviving are two brothers, Bill Bumgarner and Bob Bumgarner, both of Sylva; and a sister, Evelyn B. Lupo of Sylva.

Jackie Holcombe
Jackie Joe Holcombe, 71, of Jones Street, Sylva, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Moore officiating. Burial was in Bumgarner Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gary McAbee, Mark Holcombe, Don Shuler, Ronnie Bryson, James Lupo and Arthur Dillard.

A native of Jackson County, he retired from Dayco Rubber Plant as supervisor in the shipping department. He was a member of Old Savannah Baptist Church and a son of the late Kelly and Stella Sutton Holcombe.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Betty Jean Adams Holcombe; two daughters, Sharon Bryson and Carla Wilkey, both of Whittier; one son, Bobby Holcombe of Smith, Ala.; one sister, Quince Ann Sullivan of Whittier; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Claudia Darden

Claudia Stanford Darden, 72, of New Bern died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, after a battle with cancer.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. at Lakeside Chapel at Greenleaf Memorial Park. The Revs. Karen Snyder and Johnny Phillips officiated.

She was born and raised in Sylva and spent all her adult life in Plymouth before moving to New Bern in 1974. She was a member of Broad Street Christian Church, New Bern.

She was preceded in death by her husband, DeWitt Darden, her father, Claude H. Stanford, and a brother, Carl H. Stanford.

She is survived by her mother, Alice P. Stanford of New Bern; one son, DeWitt Latham Darden II of Atlantic Beach; two daughters, Claudia Lilley of Williamston and Celia Darden of Greenville; one brother, Gary Lloyd Stanford of Gettysburg, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Broad Street Christian Church in New Bern, First Christian Church in Williamston, or the Perpetual Care Fund c/o Lovedale Baptist Church in Sylva.


Edith Hawkins

Edith Hunter Hawkins, 94, of Cashiers died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Universal Healthcare Center in Fletcher.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at Cashiers United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Beam officiating. Burial was in Pisgah Gardens, Brevard.

A native of Salem, S.C., she lived in Cashiers for nearly 70 years. She was born Sept. 15, 1910, to the late William Green and Winnie Nicholson Hunter. She served as treasurer for the Cashiers Senior Citizens and also volunteered for the Jackson County Board of Elections. She owned and operated Pinegrove Laundry from 1927 to 1964 with her husband. She was a member of the Cashiers United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ralph Hawkins, who died in 1966; one son, Lewis M. Hawkins; 10 brothers, Earnest, Earl, Claude, Oliver, Curt, Dewey, Kirby, Hydrick, Sampson and Sherman Hunter; and two sisters, Ella Littleton and Ola Smith.

Surviving are one son, Carleton R. Hawkins of Arden; a brother, Richard Hunter of Brevard; one niece whom she raised, Delia H. Neely; three grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and three step great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Cashiers United Methodist Church Capital Campaign Fund.

Bessie Galloway

Bessie Jane Owen Galloway, 90, of the Wolf Mountain Community, Tuckasegee, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, in Wolf Mountain Baptist Church with the Revs. Newell Hoxit and Devon Owen officiating. Burial was in Wolf Mountain Cemetery.

She was a native of Transylvania County. She was the daughter of the late Blye and Altoona McCall Owen and the wife of the late Cos Galloway. She was the oldest member of Charleys Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Dallas Galloway of Tuckasegee and Dewey Galloway of Balsam Grove; three daughters, Aileen Owen of Tuckasegee, Kathleen Hoxit of Pickens, S.C., and Jo Ann Connelly of Easley, S.C.; one brother, Wallace Vernie Owen of Tuckasegee; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Ottis McCall

Ottis Swayne McCall, 56, of Country Road, Cashiers, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, in Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, at Cashiers Baptist Church with the Revs. Nathan Moss, Johnny Norris, Art Fowler and Delbert McCall officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. VFW Post No. 7339 and American Legion Post No. 108 conducted complete military graveside rites.

He was born in Rabun County, Ga., but had lived in Cashiers most of his life. He was the son of Loretta Bradley McCall of Cashiers and the late Alvis B. McCall. He was a farmer and builder and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had served on the Community Council in Cashiers.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Stella Moss McCall; one daughter, Felecia Hinshaw of Knoxville, Tenn.; three sons, Tony McCall, Jason McCall and Michael McCall, all of Cashiers; three sisters, Margaret Gibson of Seneca, S.C., Sharon Pressley of Hendersonville and Cindy Owen of Lake Toxaway; four brothers, Griffin McCall. Jerry McCall and Alan McCall, all of Cashiers, and Terry McCall of Charlotte; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, P.O. Box 1648, Franklin, NC 28744.

Fred Stephens

Fred Stephens, 78 of Spokane, Wash., died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, after a battle with cancer.

A native of Sylva, he was born Aug. 18, 1926 to Mariah Stephens and the late T.R. Stephens. He left home at age 16 to work for the railroad. He later spent 16 months in the Navy and upon discharge moved to Washington State where he worked on the Coulee Dam. He later owned his own painting company, Stephens Painting.

He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Ted Stephens and Clyde Stephens.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Betty; five children: Kathleen Luhn of Othello, Wash., Michael Stephens of Stockton, Calif., Laurie Bohn of Sierra Madre, Calif., Kerrie Stephens of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Julie Korssjoen of North Bend, Wash.; three brothers, J.D. Stephens, Ralph Stephens and Mack Stephens; five sisters, Frances Whittmire, Flora Haskett, Kay Potts, Virginia Parris and Gaynell Bailey; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.


Robert Dorris, Sr.

Robert Raymond Dorris, Sr., 85, of Salt Springs, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at the VA Hospital in Gainesville, Fla.

He was born in Tacoma, Wash., and later moved to Florida after service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and he wrote for Back Wood Trail Magazine.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leonora "Linda" Dorris and one son, Scott Boyd Dorris.

Surviving are two daughters, Martha Dorris Miller of Cashiers, and Laurie Dorris of Dillsboro; two sons, Robert R. Dorris, Jr. of Zephyhills, Fla., and Donald J. Dorris, of Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Hiers Funeral Home, Ocala, Fla., was in charge of arrangements.


Curtis Holland

Curtis Holland, 44, of Clarkesville, Ga., died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Turpin officiating and Denise Eller giving the eulogy. Interment followed in Eastview Cemetery.

Born in Sylva April 19, 1960, he was the son of the late Doyle Holland. He was employed by Pizza Hut in Cornelia, Ga., with seven years of service. He was an avid fan of golf, football, and baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves. He attended Mountain Resources and was a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Britta Lee Holland and Inez Cope Clontz.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Marlene and Marvin Cantrell of Mt. Airy, Ga.; three brothers, Steve Holland of Baldwin, Ga., Keith Holland of Mt. Airy, and Andy Holland of Cleveland, Ga.; and his grandfather, Claude Holland of Cullowhee.


Nora Cowan

Nora Lee Cowan, 87, of Old Settlement Road, Sylva, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at MIssion Hospitals, St. Joseph's campus, Asheville, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Ray McCall and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Stillwell Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Shelton, Dennis and Ryan Rector, Ralph Davis, Jr., Kent Davis and Jimmy McConnell.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Webster Baptist Church and daughter of the late George and Cordelia Ashe Hoxit. She was preceded in death by her husband David Cowan, who died in 1978; three sisters, Mamie McConnell, Bessie Mills and Beaulah Melton; and three brothers, Cecil Dillard, L.C. Hoxit and George W. Hoxit.

Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Sutton of Sylva and Barbara Penland of Marshall; two sisters, Ila McConnell of Sylva and Azaka Painter of Washington; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.


Glen Queen

Glen Queen, 75, of Cullowhee, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Revs. Huey Stanford and Avery Brown officiating. Burial was in Queen Cemetery.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. He was the son of the late Cleveland and Lessie Shelton Queen and was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Edgar, Manuel, and T.H. Queen; and three sisters Lillie Fox, Jaunita Queen, and Eva Broom. He was a member of the East LaPorte Methodist-Baptist Church.

Surviving are two brothers, Dewey Queen of Sylva and Kit Queen of High point; and one sister, Betty Sue Moore of Cullowhee.
