Smoky Mountain soccer team claims 4-0 victory over Swain

Eddie Noell scored twice late in the first half to break a scoreless tie, and Smoky Mountain went on to a 4-0 non-conference soccer victory at Swain on Oct. 12.

Heavy rain fell most of the second half after part of the first half was played in a light rain.

"Swain isn't the same team they used to be," Coach Dolphus Brown said. "They've got some excellent coaches, and they are impressive. They are a worthy opponent. We pounded their goal but couldn't score until very late in the half."

Noell put SM on the board with some three minutes left in the half off an assist from Bryan Mand.

"The ball was played off the right side to Eddie," the coach said. "Their keeper came out, and he beat the last defender."

Noell struck again with less than a minute to play in the half for a 2-0 lead.

"He just dribbled through some players and pushed it past their keeper from 12 yards out," Brown said.

The Mustangs made it 3-0 four minutes into the second half on a breakaway by Mand.

"He juked somebody and was able to get free and blast it in from 7 or 8 yards out on the right side," Brown said.

Bryon Houghton scored the final goal late in the game.

"He was about 25 yards out unmarked," Brown said. "He took a rip, and the ball stayed on the ground. It skipped across the wet field. Their keeper got his hands on it, but it was such a blistering shot that it went in."

The Mustangs took 25 shots to five by the Maroon Devils. SM's Bryan Newbold and Sterling Brady had two saves apiece. Cory Sutton made 13 saves for Swain.
