Smoky Mountain marks Senior Night with victory

Although it wasn't the last home soccer game of the season, Smoky Mountain observed Senior Night on Oct. 13, and the Mustangs (14-6, 8-5) celebrated with an 8-0 win over Erwin at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

"We played probably as well as we have all year," Coach Dolphus Brown said. "Sometimes when you're in a game like that, everybody wants to be the hero, but that wasn't the case this time. It was one of the most unselfish games I've ever seen us play."

Eddie Noell scored the first goal with an assist from Bryan Mand two minutes into the game.

"The ball was played to Eddie from the left side," Brown said. "He juked a guy and pushed it past the keeper from 10 or 12 yards."

Jonathan Toledo's first career goal put SM up 2-0 at the 12-minute mark.

"It was just him and the keeper from 8 yards out," the coach said.

Zeke Donley and Mand assisted on P.J. Arkansas' goal that made it 3-0 at the midpoint of the first half.

"Zeke played the ball to Bryan, who made a one-touch pass to P.J., who was open from 6 yards out on the right side," Brown said.

Grant Schallock scored with an assist from Noell for a 4-0 lead at the 24-minute mark.

"Eddie pushed it up the left side inside the top of the box," Brown said. "The keeper came out, and Grant kicked it in from 8 yards or so."

Schallock provided the assist on the next goal, which was scored by Coleman Corzine making it 5-0 at the 29-minute mark.

"Grant got the ball from the left side and headed it to Coleman, who was 10 yards out," the coach said.

SM led 6-0 at intermission after Corzine scored again at the 37-minute mark.

"Coleman was about 15 yards out," Brown said. "The ball had been kicked around a little bit. Coleman ended up with it unmarked on the left side."

Noell put SM up 7-0 seven minutes into the second half on a penalty kick after a foul in the box.

Kirk Childress scored the final goal off an assist from Arkansas with three minutes to play.

"We had moved a couple of our fullbacks up to striker," Brown said. "Kirk got a nice pass from P.J. He turned with it from 11 or 12 yards and made a nice shot past the keeper."

The Mustangs dominated play with 28 shots to Erwin's four. SM's Bryan Newbold made two saves, and teammate Sterling Brady had three. Seth Wyatt made five saves for the Warriors.

The Mustang JVs are 8-2-3 after a 2-0 win. David Cheatham and Rob Tyson scored the goals.
