Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Lib Bradley

Elizabeth "Lib" Bradley, 73, of Timber Leaf Drive, Sylva, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Love's Chapel United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Dan Stiles and Ray McCall officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Tim Bradley, T.J. Bradley, Ronnie Bumgarner, Sam Whitaker, Don O'Neal and Lewis Bradley Jr.

A native of Jackson County, where she had lived most of her life, she had been a teacher and received her bachelor's degree in education at Western Carolina University. She had served as a Cub Scout den mother and was a member of Savannah Community Development Center.

She was the daughter of the late Lewis W. and Mabel Edwards Bumgarner and was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Patricia Ann Bradley, and a brother, Jack Bumgarner.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Robert Deral Bradley; two sons Bob Bradley of Greenville, Tenn., and Larry Bradley of Fletcher; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice, 132 Sylva Plaza, Sylva, NC 28779.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Bertha Haskett

102104berthahaskettBertha Nicholson Haskett, 97, of the Holly Springs community, Pickens County, S.C., died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at Cannon Memorial Hospital, Pickens.

Born Dec. 14, 1906, in Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late William Jasper and Elizabeth Conner Nicholson and had resided in the Holly Springs area since the mid 1930s. She was a homemaker and for many years, assisted in running the family corn mill and general store. She was an avid crocheter, handcrafts person, and gardener.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Parker Haskett Sr.; and four children, Alma Elders, Bessie Cheek, Betty Trotter and Lunie Haskett.

Surviving are two sons, Furman Haskett and Parker Haskett Jr., both of Pickens; eight daughters, Jane Patterson, Jo Anders, Shirley Elrod, Reba Chastain and Julia Gilstrap, all of Pickens, Fran Wood of Birmingham, Ala., Lydia Welch of Charleston, S.C., and Jessie Justice of Brevard; one brother William Nicholson, Jr., of Franklin; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grand children, and four great-great grandchildren.


George Maney

George H. Maney Sr., 88, of Loco Hill Drive, Dillsboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at his residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Harvey Gass and Sherrill Ammons officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Grandsons were pallbearers.

A native of Swain County, he lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a Native American, was fluent in the Cherokee language, an avid outdoorsman and a retired businessman and restaurant owner.
He was a son of the late James Alfred and Verna Martin Maney and was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Peggy Sue Maney; a grandson; a great-grandson; two brothers, Roy "Mike" Maney and Dan Maney; and two sisters, Myrtle Page and Ann Phillips.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Helen Brendle Maney; five daughters, Gail Slagle of Dillsboro, Marjorie Rose of Monroe, Phyllis McDowell of Whittier, Connie Cunningham of Flat Rock and Donna Lockhart of Trinity; three sons, Kenneth Maney of Waynesville, George H. Maney Jr. of Whittier and Gary Maney of Whittier; two sisters, Roberta Howard of Bryson City and Betty Fisher of Fresno, Calif.; two brothers, Robert "Pat" Maney of Bryson City and Norman Maney of Warren, Pa.; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Nell Endzel

Nell Robinson Endzel, of Albuquerque, N.M., died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, in Albuquerque.

Memorial services were held Monday, Oct. 11, in Albuquerque.

A native of Sylva, she was the daughter of the late Griffin and Sally Mae Hooper Robinson. She graduated from Western Carolina University in 1959. After getting married in 1960 and leaving the area, she returned to Asheville in 1977 and earned a nursing degree from WCU. She worked at Highland Hospital in Asheville from 1980-92 and was later charge nurse at the University of New Mexico Mental Health Services Unit. After moving to New Mexico, she enjoyed the opera.

Surviving are two sons, Edward W. Endzel Jr. of Albuquerque and Gregory G. Endzel of Bernalillo, N.M.; one grandson, and one great-granddaughter.


Roxie Metcalf

102104metcalfRoxie Marie Wilde Metcalf, 85, of the Haw Creek community, Asheville, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at Givens Estates Health Care Center in Asheville following an extended period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in the chapel of Madison Funeral Home, Marshall. The Rev. Joe Fulk officiated. Burial was in Tillery Cemetery. Pallbearers were Clifton and Carleton Metcalf, Ed McKnight, Ken Hembree, Jack Whitson and Eric Lauff.

A native of Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Roxie Kate Allen Wilde and McKinley Prichard (Max) Wilde. She was born Aug. 30, 1919, and was also preceded in death by three sisters.

She retired in 1993 from Belk Stores in Asheville, following a long career in private businesses, including the Ruth Originals Company and Briarwood Motel in Hendersonville. She was a leading salesperson in the women's department at Belk in Asheville Mall for many years, retiring one day short of her 74th birthday following a fall which required extensive rehabilitation.

Surviving are her daughter, Wilma Jean Metcalf Sinclair of Weaverville; one son, Clifton Blake Metcalf of Lake Junaluska; one sister, Pearl Vernell Wilde McMahan of Asheville; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Givens Estates, the general scholarship fund of Western Carolina University, the general scholarship fund of Wake Forest University, or the Tillery Cemetery Fund.


Robert Long

Robert Lee Long, 42, of Campers Lane, Cherokee, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at his residence.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home, The Rev. Larry Bryson officiated.

A native of Greenwood, S.C., he was a son of the late John David Long.

Surviving are his wife, Alice Walker Long; his mother, Jean Thompson Gallagher of Charleston, S.C.; and one son, John David Long Jr. of Grovetown, Ga.


Jessie Dugan

Jessie Ethel Owle Dugan, 82, of Coopers Creek Road, Bryson City, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Lambert officiating. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery. Grandsons were pallbearers.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church and Qualla Arts and Crafts. She was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Lillian Arch Owle Solaman and was also preceded in death by her husband, James Boyce Dugan, who died in 1989; a son, James Todd Dugan' a brother, Henry Owle; and a grandson.

Surviving are six daughters, Joyce Sneed, Judy Hyatt and Janice Smith, Jewell Fisher and Jackie Queen, all of Cherokee, and Jane Thomasson of Whittier; two sons, John Dugan of Bryson City and Jerry Dugan of Cherokee; four brothers, Robert Owle, Lloyd Carl Owle, Dewey Owle and Freeman Owle, all of Cherokee; four sisters, Annette Fish, Ruby Crowe, Katherine Owle and Peggy Wolfe, all of Cherokee; 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Joe Stallard

Joe Ed Stallard, 66, of East Piney Mountain Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at East Stone Gap Baptist Church, Big Stone Gap, Va. Burial was in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap.

A native of Wise County, Va., he lived in Jackson County the past 10 years. He was a retired coal miner, an avid NASCAR fan, a carpenter, brick mason and wood worker, an avid outdoorsman and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He was a son of the late Raleigh and Monica Mays Stallard and was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Joe Stallard.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Lenora Ann Neeley Stallard; two daughters, Lisa Cress of Big Stone Gap, and Michelle Carroll of Whittier; one sister, Charlotte Cox of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Jack Stallard of Norton, Va., and Kenneth Stallard of Wise, Va.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Piney Mountain Baptist Church.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Morris Chester

Morris E. Chester of Candler died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, after a period of declining health.

A noon service of remembrance was held Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Candler with Gloria Schweizer officiating.

A native of Jackson County, he lived in Michigan for many years before moving to Candler in 1974. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

A son of the late Manuel D. and Etta L. Chester, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sally B. Chester; one brother, Harold Chester; and four sisters, Hazel C. Tyler, Charmie C. Cooper, Edith C. Davis and Joyce C. Garrett.

Surviving are one brother, Lawrence Chester of Webster; one sister, Dorothy C. Allman of Webster; one stepson, Robert Blackwell of Sylva; and one step-granddaughter.

Forest Lawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
