Lady Panthers stop SM in conference volleyball
Franklin turned back Smoky Mountain 25-22, 27-25, 25-18 in a Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball match last Thursday at Franklin.
"I could not ask for more from those girls," said Deb Moore, acting head coach. "They played some awesome volleyball. It was a great match to watch. I'm real proud of them."
The Lady Mustangs (8-12, 4-10) made a couple of runs to keep the first game close. Erin Hayes served three points, and Amy Haggard had a block bringing SM within 15-14. Four points, including two aces, by Haggard and Jennifer Webb's block made it 23-20, but the Lady Panthers used two sideouts to win the game.
Just as in game one, Franklin led most of game two. However, Kristine Webb served four points while Haggard had a kill and Jennifer Webb recorded a block for a 24-23 SM edge. Kristine Webb was serving for the first time this season because the Lady Mustangs had used their allotted substitutions for the game. The Lady Mustangs had another chance to serve for the win but failed to cash in.
The Lady Panthers jumped in front 8-1 in the third game. Three points from Bonnie Adams, along with Katie Johnson's kill, cut the gap to 16-11. Johnson served three points, including two aces, making it 21-16, but the Lady Mustangs could come no closer.
Kristine Webb put down seven kills while Jennifer Webb had six kills and three blocks. Haggard and Katie Crisp both had five digs.
Haggard led in service points with seven while serving 91.7 percent. Adams and Hayes were perfect in 11 and 10 serves, respectively. Also not missing a serve were Kristine Webb (five), Ale Ensley (two) and Laura Bowers (one). Johnson served 90.9 percent. Team serving was 91.2 percent.
The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 11-9 with a 25-16, 20-25, 25-13 loss. Kelli Woodard put down 10 kills, and LeNay Shular had 10 assists.
"It was a battle," Moore said. "There were so many rallies back and forth where we were digging everything they hit and they were digging everything we hit. We have no reason to not keep our heads up. We played an awesome game."
