ATTENTION WORLD WAR II VETERANS: The North Carolina State Board of Education has signed a law that enables local boards to issue high school diplomas to all honorably-discharged World War II veterans who request the diploma and have not previously received a high school diploma. To be eligible, veterans must have: attended a high school between 1937 and 1946 with graduation years of 1940-1950; left high school prior to graduation to enlist in the armed forces of the United States; served in World War II between Sept. 16, 1940, and Dec. 31, 1946; and been honorably discharged. If you fall into this category, please contact Frankie Harris in the Superintendent's Office, Jackson County Schools, 586-2311, ext. 222. A local graduation ceremony is planned for Thursday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. at Southwestern Community College. Please note that diplomas can be awarded posthumously when applied for by a veteran's next-of-kin.
