Winners, sun shine at WCU's 30th Mountain Heritage Day
Storm-weary Western North Carolina residents got a chance to kick up their heels and celebrate mountain heritage as a crowd estimated at 31,500 gathered on the campus of Western Carolina University for the 30th annual Mountain Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 25.
Morning fog over the festival site quickly gave way to bright sunshine – good news for WNC residents who have been hit hard recently by the remnants of hurricanes Frances and Ivan.
Former Jackson County resident John Newman, right, was honored with the Eva Adcock Award at Western Carolina University's 30th annual Mountain Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 25. The award was established in 1992 to recognize longtime and significant service to Mountain Heritage Day by a member of the festival organizing committee. Newman worked at Western 31 years as systems, networking and operations manager for the university's Division of Information Technology before retiring in May 2002, and has volunteered at Mountain Heritage Day for 13 years. Presenting the award is Doug Davis, a former WCU staff member who guided the festival as committee chairman for most of its first two decades.
Many festival attendees chose to participate in a variety of Mountain Heritage Day contests. Results are:
ANTIQUE AUTO SHOW
