Students preparing for upcoming vote

100704voting
niefeat302Smoky Mountain High School senior Laura Lumb, right, got involved with the political process last Friday (Oct. 1) by registering her fellow seniors to vote. As part of her senior project on voter apathy, Lumb also passed out election information to younger students, including 14-year-old Amanda Bowman, left. Lumb is one of four SMHS students whose senior projects involve the 2004 election, said Alice Pendergast, project coordinator. Bryon Houghton is holding a mock election and studying discrepancies between George W. Bush's words and actions; Samantha Blanton is writing newspaper articles and exploring the ways attack ads influence voters; and Sage Dunston is researching media bias and working for Channel One News.
