North Buncombe tops Lady Mustangs in five

Smoky Mountain dropped the first two games, battled back to even the match, but lost the deciding game as North Buncombe took a 25-10, 25-19, 22-25, 13-25, 15-9 Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball victory on Sept. 28 at Weaverville.

The Lady Mustangs played without middle hitter Kristine Webb, who was sidelined due to a knee injury.

"With Kristine's injury and her being a key player for us, we had to make some changes in the lineup and try a few players at different places in the rotation," Coach Tonya Wilson said. "It was an adjustment at first."

She noted the team played better as the match went along before struggling at the end.

The Lady Hawks controlled the first game by taking leads of 8-3 and 20-9.

They held a slight lead most of game two until Sarah Haggard's two points, including an ace put SM up 19-17. North scored the last eight points of the game.

Bonnie Adams served the first four points, including an ace, in game three. The Lady Mustangs fell behind late but rallied for a 21-20 edge after three points by Erin Hayes. Amy Haggard ended the game with an ace.

SM opened a 20-12 lead in the fourth game after Hayes served five points, including an ace, and Jennifer Webb had a kill. Amy Haggard again served the clinching points with the game ending on another Webb kill.

SM's only lead in game five was 3-2 on two points by Katie Crisp. North closed the match on a 6-1 run.

Bridget Brannigan put down 13 kills while Webb had seven kills and three blocks. Sarah Haggard handed out 12 assists, and Crisp had four aces.

Hayes led in service points with 12 and served 94.7 percent. Adams and Sarah Haggard both finished at 92.9 percent. Brannigan was perfect on four serves. Team serving was 88.9 percent.

North Buncombe won the JV match 25-17, 17-25, 25-23. Brittany Gilbert had 11 assists. Kelli Woodard and Colleen Davis both put down six kills.

"Serving errors killed us the first game," Coach Deb Moore said. "We really improved from the beginning of the match until the end. The control got a lot better."
