Lady Mustang spikers win over Lady Rams

Smoky Mountain turned back Roberson 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 25-14 in a Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball match Sept. 29 at Roberson.

"We started out slow, but in the third and fourth games we kicked it up a little bit," Coach Tonya Wilson said. "I walked away with a good feeling. I felt we really played as a team."

The Lady Rams led early in the opening game, but SM took the lead for good at 11-9 after two points from Sarah Haggard and Jennifer Webb's kill. Bridget Brannigan's kill ended the game with Bonnie Adams serving.

Roberson went up 8-3 in the second game and stayed in front the rest of the way.

The Lady Rams held a 9-2 lead in game three, but the Lady Mustangs slowly chipped away. Laura Bowers served four points giving SM an 18-16 lead. The game ended on Webb's kill for a side out.

Krista Edwards served three points, including an ace, in the fourth game while Brannigan and Amy Haggard had kills for a 7-2 lead that SM would maintain the rest of the night. Sarah Haggard served three points, while Webb and Amy Haggard had kills, making it 24-14. The match ended on a side out.

Sarah Haggard finished with 25 assists.

"Sarah had an incredible game," Wilson said. "With the change in the lineup (due to an injury to middle hitter Kristine Webb) an opportunity opened up for her, and she took advantage of it. I'm very proud of her."

Brannigan led in kills with 15. Webb had 11 kills and five blocks. Katie Crisp registered four aces.

"Bonnie Adams took her game to a new level," the coach said. "She exercised leadership on the court and was really digging for balls that two or three weeks ago we would not have been getting up."

Hayes was tops in service points with 10 and served 94.4 percent. Sarah Haggard served 93.8 percent. Bowers was perfect in six serves. Team serving was 81.7 percent.

"To some degree, everybody did a good job," Wilson said.

"The Lady Mustang JVs won 26-24, 25-23. Kelli Woodard had five kills and four aces. LeNay Shular also had four aces and handed out four assists. Colleen Davis added three digs.

"We had an opportunity to get everybody some playing time," Coach Deb Moore said. "Everybody adjusted well and played their positions well. We did a pretty good job of controlling the ball."

She singled out Woodard for her play.
