Lady Eagles hold off SM on Senior Night

East Henderson held off Smoky Mountain 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15 in a Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball match last Thursday at the SM gym.

"I was proud of them for coming out and showing a lot of heart and playing hard," Coach Tonya Wilson said. "It was probably the best we've started a match. We didn't have to get warmed up. We came out from the beginning and played our tails off. East Henderson is one of the stronger teams in our conference We competed with them the whole night."

Playing on Senior Night, the Lady Mustangs (7-8, 4-7) moved in front 10-7 in the first game as Sarah Haggard had five points to go along with two kills and a block by Jennifer Webb. East scored six unanswered points to take the lead for good at 17-15.

Four points from Laura Bowers helped SM take a 5-1 edge in game two. East was in front 19-16, but Sarah Haggard served the game's final six points, including an ace. Webb and Amy Haggard had kills in the closing run.

Katie Crisp scored three points and Bridget Brannigan had a kill in the third game putting the Lady Mustangs up 5-3. The Lady Eagles fought back for a 21-14 lead. Ale Ensley served four points, including two aces, while Amy Haggard and Brannigan had kills cutting the gap to 22-18.

East led throughout the fourth game.

Sarah Haggard handed out 15 assists and had five digs. Amy Haggard totaled nine kills, five digs and two and a half blocks. Webb had three and a half blocks.

Wilson singled out Brannigan for playing well after being moved to middle hitter earlier in the week.

The Lady Mustang JVs are 9-6 following a 16-2, 25-22, 25-17 win.

"They played awesome," Coach Deb Moore said. "To beat East Henderson is a dream."

Brittany Gilbert dished out 11 assists. Kelli Woodard and Colleen Davis had nine and seven kills, respectively.

"Kelly Childress moved to middle hitter and really stepped it up," Moore said.
