Smoky Mountain wins non-conference match

Smoky Mountain’s volleyball team picked up a 25-22, 25-15, 25-23 non-conference victory over Pisgah on Sept. 20 at the SM gym.

“I was really proud of how we played, especially after all the time we had off because of the weather,” Coach Tonya Wilson said. “We hadn’t really been on the court since we had gotten beat by Franklin. They came out and proved they wanted to win.”

Erin Hayes served seven straight points in the first game helping the Lady Mustangs got off to a strong start in the match.

SM was an easy winner in game two as Katie Crisp served eight consecutive points.

The third game went to the wire before the Lady Mustangs emerged victorious.

“We passed the ball extremely well, and we had excellent serving and excellent serve receiving,” Wilson said. “We all know that’s where it starts.”

Ale Ensley led the team in kills with six. Crisp contributed 10 assists and three aces. Amy Haggard was tops in digs with 11, and Hayes led in aces with four.

The Lady Mustang JVs won 21-25, 25-16, 25-18.

“It wasn’t the prettiest win, but it was a win,” Coach Deb Moore said. “We could have played better. They’re working hard in practice, and are getting better.”
