WE RECEIVED SEVERAL NOTES this week expressing gratitude for those who offered assistance during last week’s flooding and power outages.

The first came from Andrew and Lou Ann Smith at Village Studio in Dillsboro, which was flooded Friday by the rising waters of Scotts Creek. “The amount of assistance and support we received on Friday and Saturday was overwhelming,” the Smiths wrote. They specifically thanked Duke Power crews for restoring electricity, the Jarrett House for providing lunch on Saturday to flooded-out Front Street merchants, and the Dillsboro Chocolate Factory for supplying cookies and coffee. The Smiths also thanked their fellow merchants and town of Dilllsboro personnel.

Another note came from Bill Bullis of Cullowhee, who praised Western Carolina’s Resale Electric Co. for its prompt and professional response to the widespread power outages that followed Hurricane Ivan. “Let’s not require a disaster for us to appreciate the talents and hard work of those who allow us to enjoy our lives all through the ‘storm-free’ times of the year,”  Bullis wrote.

HERALD READERS and ADVERTISERS are reminded of the newspaper’s changing deadlines. Society (weddings, engagements, anniversaries and birthdays for those 75-plus years old) deadline is Friday at noon for the next week’s paper. Deadline for all other news, including sports, is noon on Monday. Starting with the Oct. 7 edition, all classified and legal advertising must be received by Monday at noon to be included in that week’s edition.

OUR TELEPHONE NUMBER here at The Sylva Herald is listed incorrectly in the telephone book. VETERANS who are unable to have mail delivered as a result of recent storms and flooding may pick up mail at their local post office with a picture ID. According to U.S. Postal Service officials, undeliverable mail, including veterans’ checks, will be returned to the post office, held for 10 days, and then returned to sender. To avoid delays in delivery of benefits, veterans and beneficiaries may have their checks deposited directly into a checking or savings account. For information about direct deposit, call toll free at 1-877-838-2778. The Department of Veterans Affairs recommends veterans with a VA home loan on property in hurricane-affected areas contact their mortgage company for assistance. Call VA toll free at 1-800-827-1000 with any questions.

THE NURSING NETWORK would like to thank each and every RN, LPN, CNA and other medical personnel who selflessly put aside their own safety to meet the emergency staffing need of hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities in Jackson, Macon, Swain, Haywood and Buncombe counties during the devastation and flooding left by Hurricane Ivan. In appreciation, the network will host a luncheon Friday, Sept. 24, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for its dedicated staff. Health care providers and facilities interesting in contracting with the agency or health care workers who would like to become a part of the team may call 631-9735.

REGIONAL ARTISTS have until Thursday, Sept. 30, to submit applications to become a member of the art team for Pack Square Conservancy’s new $12.5 million park set to be built in downtown Asheville. The conservancy will choose four to six artists to work with architects on the creation and placement of art in the park.
