SM soccer team keeps Titans winless

Smoky Mountain kept McDowell winless with a 4-1 non-conference soccer victory Sept. 15 at Marion.

Coach Dolphus Brown said it was the first time the Mustangs (8-2) had ever defeated a 4-A opponent.

“Our kids were real excited about that,” he said.

“That was a nice win,” Brown added. “I know McDowell is not a real good team and not what a 4-A team should be.”

The Titans opened the scoring in the first two minutes on a long shot by Cameron Freeman.

“The kid just launched it from 40 yards out,” Brown said. “It was a sinking line drive, and it sailed under the cross bar and into the net.”

P.J. Arkansas tied it at the 15-minute mark with an assist from Bryan Mand.

“P.J. took the pass at the top of the box,” the coach said. “He beat the defender and was one-on-one with the keeper.”

The Mustangs took the lead for good at 2-1 on Mand’s rebound shot five minutes into the second half.

“We had two great shots that their keeper knocked away,” Brown said. “The ball bounced out to the left, and Bryan nailed it.”

The margin reached 3-1 at the 53-minute mark when Eddie Noell took a pass from Arkansas and dribbled the ball through defenders for the shot.

Garrett McCollough concluded the scoring at the 77-minute mark off an assist from Grant Schallock.

“He got behind the keeper on the right side and shot it right by him,” Brown said.

The Mustangs had an 18-5 advantage in shots. Rey Hernandez made eight saves for McDowell, and SM’s Bryan Newbold had three.

Brown said Newbold had been sick and received plenty of help from the defense.

“Our defense protected him,” he said. “They have really jelled. They basically shielded Bryan from anything they wanted to do.”

The Mustang JVs are 4-1-1 after a 2-0 win. Joey Cox and John Brown scored the goals.
