Lois Retherford
Lois Bradford Retherford, 75, of Floyd Jones Road, Tuckasegee, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Cedar Baptist Church. The Revs. Jim Ed Powell and Sherrill Ammons officiated. Burial was in Woodring Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ricky Piper, Gary Piper, Rory Jones, Todd Rhoadarmer, Scott Henry, Alden Middleton and Andy Jones.
A native of Leavenworth, Kan., she had lived in Jackson County for the past six years and was a daughter of the late George and Mary Wiseman Gabryk Bradford.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Sarah Delaney; and three brothers, Charles, Bill, and George Jr. Bradford.
Surviving are one daughter, Diana Jones of Tuckasegee; two sons, James Piper of Oceanside, Calif., and Gerald Piper of Tangeat, Ore.; one sister, Julie Switzer of Kansas; one brother, Thomas Bradford of Kansas; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

James Arch
James Edward Arch, 49, of Cherokee’s Painttown community, died unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Edgefield, S.C.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at Cherokee Church of God. The Revs. George Polecat and Jim Parks officiated. Burial was in the Arch Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Noah Arch, Jason Parker, Dirk Welch, Justin Arch and Dion Toinetta.
A native of Swain County, he was a carpenter and a graduate of Cherokee High School.
Surviving are his mother, Alice Mae Arch of Cherokee; five sons, David Ethan Arch, James William Arch, Travis P. Crowe and Dirk Welch, all of Cherokee, and Logan Gravier of Sylva; one daughter, Becky Young of Cherokee; one brother, Robert Bruce Arch of Cherokee; two sisters, Marie Arch and Irene Bradley, both of Cherokee; and four grandchildren.

Phillip Bodford
Phillip Scott Bodford, 26, of Frosty Ridge Road, Sylva, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Earl Holden officiated. Burial was in Shular Cemetery.
A native of Ocala, Fla., he had lived in Jackson County for the past 17 years. He worked for Hughes Drywall and was a member of Buff Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Wendy Jean Bodford; grandfather, Emmitt Blanton; and grandparents, Frank and Kansas McMahan.
Surviving are his parents, Mike and Anita Blanton Broom of Sylva and Wynford Gene Bodford of Waynesville; one son, Travis Scott Bodford of Sylva; one sister, April Bryson of Sylva; one brother, Wynford Tyson Bodford of Waynesville; one stepbrother, Steven Broom of Sylva; grandmother, Dixie Blanton of Sylva; and grandparents, Frank and Beulah Broom of Sylva.

Joyce Teesateskie
Joyce Teesateskie, 4-week-old infant daughter of Lloyd Jr. and Josephine Lynn Driver Teesateskie of Little Snowbird Road, Robbinsville, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at Big Cove Missionary Baptist Church. The Revs. Bo Parris and Phillip Ellington officiated. Burial was in Adams Creek Cemetery.
She was born in Buncombe County, but was a resident of Graham County.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Teesateskie III; and grandmothers, Arbara Driver and Joyce Teesateskie.
Surviving, in addition to the parents, are one brother, Lloyd Jim Teesateskie of the home; maternal grandfather, Jim Driver Jr. of Cherokee, and paternal grandfather, Lloyd Teesateskie of Robbinsville.

Wanda Shelton
Wanda Lee Otter Shelton, 64, of Harold Street, Sylva, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at her residence following a period of declining health.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Denny Crowe will officiate. Burial will be in Birdtown Cemetery. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the funeral home.
A native of Swain County, she had lived in Jackson County for the past 20 years. Daughter of the late Jarrett Owle and Mary Squirrel Otter, she was a member of Johns Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R.M. Shelton, who died in 1999; one son, Michael Shelton; three brothers, Henry, Oliver and Sam Otter; and two sisters, Sally and Mytrle.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Regina Shelton Watkins of Cullowhee; four sons, Samuel Otter and Craig Alexander Otter, both of Cherokee, Henry Otter Jr. of Sylva and John Wilburn Shelton of Dillsboro; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Rachel Reed
Rachel Tooni Reed, 76, of Tooni Branch Road, Cherokee, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Aquoni Baptist Chapel, of which she was a member. Ray Kinsland and the Revs. John West and James “Bo” Parris officiated. Burial was in Reed Cemetery.
A native of Cherokee, she was a daughter of the late Larch and Agnes Wilnoty Tooni and the wife of the late Roy Reed.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Ike Tooni; and one sister, Annie Driver.
Surviving are one foster son, Bob Driver of Cherokee; one foster daughter, Agnes Reed of Cherokee; two sisters, Dinah George and Eva Reed, both of Cherokee; and one brother, Stan Tooni of Cherokee. Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Joe Hall
Joe Jackson Hall, 70, of 139 N.E. 3rd Street, Oak Island, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dan Stiles officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery.
He was born July 26, 1934, in Sylva, son of the late John H. and Victoria Greene Hall. He moved to Oak Island from Randleman in 1994. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was retired from US Airways.
He was preceded in death by one son, Michael A. Hall.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Jordan Hall; one son, Dana C. Hall of Mocksville; one daughter, Julie A. Hall of Advance; one brother, James Hall of Arlington, Wash.; four sisters, Geneva Cabe of Sylva, Dorothy Dalton of Gastonia, Pauline Teague of McAdensville and Movis Buchanan of Warner-Robbins, Ga.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Allison Shinkman
Allison Paula Vanelle Roberts Shinkman, 38, formerly of Cherokee, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at her residence in Russellville, Tenn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. Chaplain Isaac Welch Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the Welch Family Cemetery. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the funeral home.
A native of Cherokee, she was a daughter of Hughie Roberts of Cherokee and the late Hazel Welch McQueen, who died in 2000. She attended Bible Aires Baptist Church in Morristown, Tenn.
Surviving, in addition to her father are her husband, Warren Shinkman; two daughters, Tamera Shinkman and Candice Shinkman, both of Cherokee; one son, Nathanael Shinkman of Cherokee; stepmother, Kitty Roberts of Cherokee; stepfather, David McQueen of Cherokee; one sister, Judy Hornbuckle of Cherokee; and one brother, Eddie Roberts of Cherokee.
Marian Renfro
Marian Crowley Renfro, 89, of Sylva died Sunday, Sept.19, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at Cullowhee United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, with visitation following the service. The Revs. Kelley Jones and David Reeves will officiate. Burial will be at the Shepherd Memorial Park in Hendersonville.
Daughter of the late Perrin and Margaret Wightman, she was born Feb. 19, 1915, in St. Louis, Mo., and grew up in Bethany, Mo. She was educated at Park University in Kansas City and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received her masters in education.
Her professional career included two years in the public schools of Baraboo, Wis., and 27 years at Western Carolina University. At Western, she served as dorm mother, dean of women, and teacher and counselor in the School of Education, retiring as associate professor.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Isabel True.
Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Dr. Richard Renfro, two daughters, Judith Ingle and Johana “Jo” Roberts; and three grandchildren.

Danny Cowan
Danny L. Cowan Sr., 69, of Chunns View Drive, Asheville, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at Stillwell Cemetery. The Rev. Ray McCall will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Moody Funeral Home.
A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Buncombe County since 1981. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and attended Western Carolina University. Son of the late Dan Grady and Hattie Parker Cowan, he was retired from Commercial Credit Finance after 37 years.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Lou Howell.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Sheila Kirchberg Cowan; two sons, Danny L. Cowan Jr. of Asheville and Lee Cowan of Raleigh; one daughter, Paige Cowan of Raleigh; one sister, Elaine C. Sutton of Asheville; and two grandsons.

Myrtice Henry
Myrtice Helen Henry, 75, of East Main Street, Sylva, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Robert Hernandez officiated. Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Ochre Hill Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Noah Rice and Allie Ann Bryson Henry.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Shirley Henry, Sperglon Henry and Glenn Henry.
Surviving is one sister, Marlow Stephens of Sylva.
