Teacher of the Year

Jackson County’s Teacher of the Year Jamye Christy hands a bean to second-grader Jeannette Rhinehart for a correct answer during Tuesday’s (Aug. 31) lesson on graphing. Christy uses beans as a reward for good answers and good behavior in her classroom at Scotts Creek Elementary School. Waiting their turn are, from left, Bryanna Schweibert, Sam Barnes and Jeannette’s twin, Jasmine Rhinehart. Students in Christy’s class accumulate beans for several weeks and then use them to “buy” items in a class auction, said Christy’s assistant, Sherry Bryson. Christy, who competed with five other local teachers for the honor, was named Teacher of the Year during a Monday (Aug. 30) banquet in Cullowhee. – Herald photo by Carey King
