Schallock’s goal lifts SM to win over Owen

Grant Schallock scored the game’s only goal at the 17-minute mark as Smoky Mountain defeated Owen 1-0 last Thursday in a non-conference soccer game at Swannanoa.

“He got the ball in a crowd about 25 yards out,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “He came out of the pack with the ball, and it was just him and the keeper. The keeper came out and Grant pushed it past him to the far post from about 8 yards out.”

The Mustangs (4-2) got off 19 shots to the Warhorses’ four but were unable to finish many opportunities. They even missed a penalty kick, Brown said.

“We particularly dominated the first half,” the coach said. “It was a credit to our conditioning to be able to play like that after playing Asheville the night before.”

SM’s Bryan Newbold made two saves, including one that Brown said was a beautiful diving play midway through the second half.

Owen’s Danny Mann had eight saves.

Brown said the team played outstanding defense. He singled out Aaron Whatley, Kirk Childress, Zeke Donley, Blake Proffitt and Coleman Corzine.

He noted that Martin Davis and David Cheatham were brought up from the JVs and played well.

The JVs are 2-1 after a 5-1 win. Joey Cox scored twice while Raymond Mojica, Dylan Jicha and Anthony Lumpkins all scored a goal. John Brown handed out four assists.
