Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Louise Phillips

Louise Blankenship Phillips, 61, of Hartford, Tenn., died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at her home following a short illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 21, in the chapel of Manes Funeral Home in Newport, Tenn. The Rev. Fred Gregg officiated. Burial was in Clarks Cemetery in Hartford.

A former resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of Evelyn Tredway Blankenship of Whittier and the late Rev. James Blankenship. A graduate of Swain County High School, she was employed by Ryan’s Steakhouse in Newport, Tenn.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Roger D. Phillips; two daughters, Cindy Irwin of Ball Ground, Ga., and Clara “Cricket” Anthony of Hartford; three sons, Carroll Anthony Jr. of Whittier, Martin Anthony of Jasper, Ala., and Tony Anthony of Parrottsville, Tenn.; three brothers, Harold Blankenship of Sylva, James Blankenship of Waynesville and Jerry Blankenship of Whittier; and 10 grandchildren.

Roger Long

Roger David Long, 53 of Cherokee’s Yellowhill community, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, in Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Cherokee Church of God. The Revs. M. L. Cunningham and Jim Frady officiated. Burial was in Long Family Cemetery.

A native of Cherokee, he was a son of the late Posey and Bessie Catolster Long. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Steve Youndeer Post #143 American Legion and attended Cherokee Church of God.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Barbara Pettus Long; and three brothers, Wilbur Long, Garfield Long Sr. and John Long, all of Cherokee.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John Stewart

John Furman Stewart, 84, of Valdosta, Ga., died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at Carson McLane Funeral Home in Valdosta. The Rev. Bob Dixon and Drs. Weyman Cleveland and Craig Rikard officiated. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman, Ga.

He was born in Ninety Six, S.C., on July 19, 1920, to the late Hugh Graddick and Lila Ellison Stewart. He lived in Greenwood, S.C., until 1942 when he enlisted for military service in World War II, serving from 1942-46. He served in Cape Cod, Mass., Carabelle, Fla., Anniston, Ala., and Finney General Hospital in Thomasville, Ga.

He owned and operated Stewart Auto Sales in Thomasville for more than 35 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Thomasville before moving to Valdosta in 1994 when he transferred his membership to Park Avenue United Methodist Church. In Thomasville, he served on the administrative board and was a charter member of Sue McTier Sunday school class of First United Methodist. In Valdosta, he was a member of the Fellowship Sunday school class of Park Avenue Methodist. He was a former member of Kiwanis, Men’s Garden Club and other civic organizations.

He married the former Clo Reita King of Brooks County, Ga., on Nov. 23, 1943 and the couple spent their summers in Maggie Valley and Sylva.

Surviving, in addition to his wife are one son, Keith Stewart of Valdosta; one daughter, Teresa Babbit of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Frances S. Keadle and Elaine S. Miner, both of Greenwood; 10 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Thomasville, Ga., Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Valdosta, Ga., or the Pearlman Cancer Center in Valdosta.

Harry Griffin

Harry L. Griffin, 74, of Winter Springs, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church of Sylva, of which he was a member, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11.

He was born on Sept. 11, 1929, in Miami, Fla. He was retired from the Miami Police Department after 28 years where he was assistant chief. He also was a Florida National Guard Reservist for 30 years. He lived in Whittier 22 years before moving back to Florida in 2001. He was a member of Gideons International. Son of the late Milton Griffin and Berta Hamilton Griffin, he was an instructor in Southwestern Community College’s criminal justice department from 1982-1984.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Billy H. Griffin; and one sister, Mary Ann Griffin.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Sara I. Griffin; and one sister, Berta Lee Harris.

Lloyd Crawford

Lloyd Crawford, 69, of Sylva died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. The Revs. Earl Holden, Dr. Jack Robinson, and Frank Brooks officiated. Burial was at Crawford Family Cemetery. Richard Ruff, Donald Paris, Brian Crawford, Teddy Crawford, Marvin Crawford, Melvin Crawford, Mike Dills and Tony Dills served as pallbearers.

He was born May 3, 1935, in Jackson County to the late Cicero and Myrtle Jane Robbinson Crawford. He was a self-employed carpenter for 35 years building homes and commercial businesses.
He was preceded in death by one great-grandchild.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Crawford; two sons, Ronnie Crawford of Sylva and Wayne Crawford of Cullowhee; five brothers, Alvin Crawford and Carl Crawford, both of Woodruff, S.C., Earl Crawford of Fairview, Roy Crawford of Waynesville and Clyde Crawford of Kings Mountain; six sisters, Kathryn Chesney of Woodruff, Evelyn Turpin of Asheville, Ethel Arrington of Waynesville, Harriett Wood of Hampton, Va., Lena Caldwell of Black Mountain and Louise Sutton of Canton; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Garrett Funerals and Cremations was in charge of arrangements.
