Mustang runners start year at Hendersonville

Smoky Mountain’s cross country teams made their debuts Saturday in the Western North Carolina Cross Country Carnival at Hendersonville’s Jackson Park.

The event drew runners from across North and South Carolina.

Travis Brotherton was the lone SM entrant in the invite division for elite runners. He finished 14th among the 116 participants in 16:48.

“Travis has been training hard,” Coach Lawson Hopper said. “It’s too early in the season to judge how he will do based on one meet.”

In the open division, which had 324 runners, the Mustang men placed 30th among 31 teams. The top five finishers included:

Will Cowan, 97th, 20:13; Brian Welch, 132nd, 20:57; Alen Bradley, 235th, 23:17; Bryan McManus, 271st, 24:11; and Hunter Thomas, 278th, 24:16.

The Lady Mustangs were last among the 22 teams in the open division, which had 211 runners. The top five finishers included:

Molly Collins, 100th, 25:53; Katie Hayes, 122nd, 26:37; Courtney Spalding, 125th, 26:54; Sarah Shapiro, 185th, 30:18; and Justin Mathis, 190th, 30:42.

“It was a good first meet,” Hopper said. “The kids have been working and training hard.”
