Cataloochee to be featured

Cataloochee Valley, site of the elk relocation program, will be the focus of a free program Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Western Carolina University's Mountain Heritage Center. Mountain People, Mountain Land: Cataloochee Community, set for 7 p.m. in the center auditorium, will feature park ranger Tom Robbins and former Cataloochee resident Hattie Caldwell Davis in a slide show and talk. Cataloochee Valley is located on the eastern edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Prior to its acquisition by the National Park Service in the 1930s, the valley contained a farming community, which is still remembered through the weathered boards of reconstructed churches, schools and remnants of home sites. In recent years, Cataloochee has been in the news frequently with the reintroduction of elk into the valley.
