Two more interview for Western’s AD job

Two additional candidates for the position of athletic director at Western Carolina were on campus for interviews this week.

Hank Dickenson, senior associate athletic director for external affairs at North Texas was in Cullowhee on Monday.

Chip Smith, athletic director at Morehead State, was interviewed Tuesday.

An eight-member committee is conducting a search for a replacement for Jeff Compher, who announced July 12 his plans to resign after having served in the position since March 2000. Compher accepted the job of executive associate director of athletics at Washington.

Three other candidates visited campus earlier this month as part of the process. They were Charlie Cobb and David Horning, both from N.C. State’s athletic department, and Chris Massaro, from the athletic department at South Carolina.

“This is a very important decision for the university, and we have a very deep pool of well-qualified applicants for the position,” said Gibbs Knotts, assistant professor of political science and public affairs at Western and faculty athletics representative, who is serving as chairman of the search committee. “I think that attests to the job that Jeff Compher has done in building Western’s athletics program and to the reputation of the program in the profession of athletics administration.”

In addition to meeting with university administrators, athletic department staff, coaches, student-athletes and Catamount Club board members, those interviewed attended receptions open to people on campus and in the community.
