A WEEKEND YARD SALE will benefit Mountain Trace’s effort to raise money for an activity van. It will be Saturday, Aug. 21, beginning at 7 a.m. at the Savannah Community Building.
MAX HOLLAND is retiring from his long-established Sylva law practice. New clients are being accepted for his successor, John Pavey Jr., who will also complete all of Holland’s open files. Office staff Sylvia Lyday, Lisa Buchanan and Ann Gill will continue working in the office with Pavey; Priscilla Holland and Debbie Farmer will also retire. A retirement party for Holland is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 31, from 5:30 until 8 p.m. at Nick & Nate’s.
HERALD READERS and ADVERTISERS are reminded of the newspaper’s changing deadlines. Society (weddings, engagements, anniversaries and birthdays for those 75-plus years old) deadline is Friday at noon for next week’s paper. Deadline for all other news is noon on Monday. Effective Oct. 1, all classified and legal advertising must be received by Monday at noon to be included in that week’s newspaper.

SOUL INFUSION in Sylva will serve up some free family-friendly entertainment this weekend. The tea house and bistro’s summer Singer/Songwriter Showcase will continue tonight (Thursday) with a performance by Asheville award-winning blues woman Valerie Miller. Showtime is 8 to 10 p.m. Soul Infusion will also host Hendersonville songwriter and 12-string guitar wizard Bobby Wynn this Saturday from 9 p.m. to midnight. HAYWOOD ELECTRIC MEMBERSHIP CORP. will hold its annual membership meeting Saturday, Aug. 21, at Haywood Community College in Clyde. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the business meeting will start at 10:45 a.m. Pre-meeting activities will include a health fair, exhibits and continental breakfast for the first 400 members. The Cockman Family will entertain. After the business meeting, $1,000 in cash prizes will be given away, and then a free fried chicken and barbecue pork lunch for members and their immediate families will begin. Haywood EMC provides electric service to more than 23,000 meters in Jackson, Haywood, Buncombe, Transylvania and Macon counties, plus Rabun County in Georgia and Oconee County in South Carolina.
WE RECEIVED A NOTE from former resident G.S. Martin of Bronson, Fla., praising the efforts of Duke Power Co. crews who went down to help repair the damage from Hurricane Charley. “When we got closer to the trucks, it made me proud to see that it was Duke Power from our wonderful, caring state of North Carolina ... I live in Florida now, and I still call Jackson County home – all my family lives there,” he said.
ON TAP THIS WEEK is the 22nd annual Cherokee Bluegrass Festival at Happy Holiday Campground on U.S. 19, 4 miles east of Cherokee. The three-day event begins today (Thursday) at noon. Music continues until 11 p.m. each day. Thursday’s lineup will include Ralph Stanley and Charlie Waller. Friday will feature The Osborne Brothers and Mac Wiseman, and Doyle Lawson and Ricky Skaggs will perform Saturday. For ticket information, call the campground at 497-7250.
DENTISTS ARE NEEDED for a free dental clinic planned for Sunday through Wednesday, Sept. 19-22, in Cashiers. The Blue Ridge Mountains Health Project, a coalition of area churches working to aid the needy, is sponsoring the clinic and has yet to find enough dentists willing to pitch in. They’re seeking dentists willing to donate their services in three-hour shifts on Sunday afternoon and weekday evenings. The volunteers will be working in a fully-equipped mobile dental care van sent up from Cary by the N.C. Baptist Men. Call Project president Susan Posey at 743-9924 as soon as possible to volunteer.
KIDS VOTING, a nonpartisan, non-profit organization that educates kindergarteners through high-school students about the importance of being active participants in democracy, has come to Jackson County. Come November, the program will give students the chance to accompany parents to the polls to “vote” on real candidates and ballot issues. Education coordinator Cindy Thompson is currently working through area schools to prepare teachers with Kids Voting curriculum. She’s also seeking volunteer help and business sponsors.
