Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Angela Ramsey

Angela Denise Wright Ramsey, 44, of Nicholson Cove Road,   Cullowhee, died unexpectedly Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at Promise Land Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Bryson officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Anthony Woods, Kevin Adams, Lawayne Farmer, James Wright, Daniel Wright and Doug Ramsey.

She was a native of Gainesville, Ga., and had lived in Jackson County the past nine years. She was a school bus driver with Jackson County Schools and a member of Promise Land Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Emily Juanita Lanham Baugh and grandmother, Lester Mae Wright.

Surviving are her husband of five years, Tony Ramsey; one daughter, Amber Nicholson of Canada community; one stepson, Michael Ramsey of the home; her father, Robert L. Wright of Gainesville, Ga.; grandparent, Dimple Nelson of Blairsville, Ga.; three brothers, Lyndol Wright and Chad Wright, both of Gainesville, Ga., and Jeff Ray of Flowery Branch, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Promise Land Baptist Church.

Mary Bridgers

Mary Louise Bennett Bridgers, 83, of Sylva, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Autumn Care in Waynesville, where she lived since March 2003.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at St. Paul Methodist Church in Fort Smith, Ark. Burial followed at Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith.

Born in Stillwell, Okla., she was the seventh child of the late Ben and Jane Bennett. She worked as a riveter during World War II and was later employed in retail. She was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church in Fort Smith, Ark., where she lived most of her adult life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jasper Bridgers; and four siblings.

Surviving are one son, Ben Oshel Bridgers of Sylva; one daughter, Leah Bridgers of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Lela Pykiet of Harper, Kansas, and Viola Adams of McAlester, Okla.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren;

Carrie Gladwell

 Carrie Lee Gladwell, 79, of Franklin, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center in Sylva.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The Rev. Harold Ball and the Rev. Morris Tippett officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Billy Bryson, Jeff Bryson, George Roper, Eddie Long, Billy Sprinkle and Johnny Sprinkle.

A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Alex Sprinkle and Laura Roper Sprinkle. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Barnett Galdwell, who died in 1979; one son, Kenneth Ray Gladwell; and two brothers, Henry Sprinkle and Newell Sprinkle.

Surviving are one son, Max Gladwell  of Franklin; two daughters, Virginia Bryson of Franklin and Betty Gunter Craig of Sylva; one sister, Annie Long of Franklin; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

John Robinson

John Henry Robinson Jr., 71, of Fisher Creek Road, Sylva, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral service were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Rich Peoples officiated. Burial was in Robinson Cemetery with full military rites conducted by officers from Shaw Air Force Base.

A native of Marfa, Texas, he lived in Jackson County for most of his life. He retired from the U.S. Air Force and also retired with Jackson County as building inspector. Son of the late John Henry Sr. and Effie Stiles Robinson, he was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Ruth Jacobs Robinson; two daughters, Suzie Nicholson of Sylva and Lisa Buchanan Sylva; one brother, Milton Gene Robinson of Sylva; and five grandchildren.

Raul Mendez

Raul Carbajal Mendez, 38, of Henderson Crossing, Hendersonville, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, from injuries sustained in an vehicle accident.

A memorial service was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hendersonville. The body will be sent to Comitan, Mexico, for service and burial.

Mack Deitz

Cornelius Daniel C.D. “Mack” Deitz, 90, of Westridge Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Robert Blanton officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104. Pallbearers were Joe Deitz, Bill Deitz, Neal Sellers, Eddie Bradley, Johnny Revis, Ernie Bumgarner and Clyde Bumgarner.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired career educator with Jackson County Schools, being principal at Savannah and retiring from Qualla.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific, he was a member of the William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104 and Sylva Lions Club, of which he was former president. He was a son of the late Asaph Asbury and Ruthie Buchanan Deitz.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Etta Cabe and Violet Jane Bumgarner and three brothers, Rufus Deitz, Marcelus Deitz and Alan Deitz.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Elwyn Queen Deitz; one son, Dan R. “Ronnie” Deitz of Sylva; one sister, Leila Huntley of Asheville; one brother, David Deitz of Sylva; and one grandson.


Avery Monteith

Avery Monteith of Worth, Ill., formerly of Tarpon Springs, Fla., died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004.

A native of Sylva, he was a son of the late Herman and Virginia Mae Monteith. He was a U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran, recipient of the Bronze Star, and a Staff Sgt. with the Florida National Guard in Clearwater, Fla.

Surviving are his wife, June Brady Monteith; two sons, Philip Cicero and William Monteith; two daughters, Debra Daughtry and Julann Rudniski; three brothers, Reid, Joe and Larry Monteith; three sisters, Maxine Bivens, Norma Herno and Annette Farmer; and six grandchildren.

Cremation Society of Illinois is in charge of arrangements.


David Foster

The Honorable David S. Foster of Cashiers died at his home on Monday, Aug. 16, 2004.

Services will be held at the Summer Chapel on Whiteside Cove Road at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21.

A native of Wilmington, Del., he was a retired Louisiana District and State Judge. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and Tulane Law School.

A former resident of Lafayette, La., he began his professional career in the petroleum industry and then practiced law with the firm of Voorhies and Labbe. In 1988, he became a pioneer in the field of arbitration and mediation. He was a member of the American Arbitration Association and presided over a number of national arbitration cases.

He served on numerous boards of corporate and non-profit organizations in Louisiana.

A full-time resident of Cashiers since 1993, he served the Church of the Good Shepherd on its vestry and as its outreach chairman, as well as being a member of the board of directors of the Village Green and a trustee of Whiteside Cove Community Church/School.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Malise Labbe Foster; one daughter, Elise Lander; two sons, Chad Foster and Patch Foster; one brother, Wells Foster of Kennett Square, Pa.; two sisters, Mimi Haskell of Chadds Ford, Pa., and Lucia Adams of Cashiers; and three grandchildren.

Matilda Conroy

Matilda G. Conroy, 83, of Whittier, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryson City. Father Shawn O’Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Swain Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Jerry Newlon Sr., Jerry Newlon Jr., Paul Van der Ven and Clifton Van der Ven.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a retired legal secretary and had lived in Jackson County for the past 25 years. She was a daughter of the late Herman and Freida Haman Guderian.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Conroy.

Surviving are two daughters, Arleen Newlon and Patricia Van der Ven, both of Whittier; one sister, Wilhelmina Heinemann of Ft.  Myers, Fla.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Verlin Messer

Verlin Odell Messer, 86, of the Qualla community died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Conley’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church. The Revs. Lelan Green and Robert Odiear officiated. Burial was in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, he was born May 7, 1918, to the late Thad and Ivalee Green Messer. He was a veteran of World War II, and served in the Army Air Corps in North Africa and Europe.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Ethel Odiear Messer; two daughters, Marie Clark of Dillsboro and Verna Ferguson of Jonathan Creek; three sons, Dewey Messer of Tuckasegee, Dennis Messer of Wilmot and Clinton Messer of Sylva; one sister, Irene Stokes of Gastonia; two brothers, Joe Elmer Messer of Gastonia and Kelly Messer of Burr, Neb.; and eight grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home of Bryson City was in charge of arrangements.


Gentry Gunter

Gentry M. Gunter, 86, of Bidwell Road, Whittier, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church, of which he was a member and deacon. The Revs. Steve Webb and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Gunter Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons.

A native of Swain County, he lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a retired farmer, logger and carpenter. Son of the late George Baxter and Julia Crisp Gunter, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Bryson Gunter, who died in 1982; second wife, Iva Lee Claybo Gunter, who died in 1996; and eight brothers and sisters.

Surviving are three sons, Kenneth Gunter and Gary Gunter, both of Whittier, and Rod Gunter of Dillsboro; one sister, Mary Styles of Sylva; one brother, Homer Gunter of Whittier; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 925, Sylva, NC 28779.

Rev. Milton Carothers

The Rev. Milton Stover Carothers, 72, of Tallahassee, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, of Primary Progressive Aphasia.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Faith Presbyterian, followed by a private family burial. The family will receive friends after the memorial service at the church.

A native of Tallahassee, he graduated from Leon High School in 1950 and from Florida State University in 1954, where he was class president and president of the student body.

He earned his master’s of divinity at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia and held pastorates at Covington, Va., and Salisbury. He was a university minister at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before returning to serve as Presbyterian campus minister at FSU.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Carothers; two sons, Milton Washington Carothers of South Carolina and James Higginbotham; two daughters, Sarah Jane Carothers of North Carolina and Lea Carothers Crusberg; one sister, Helen Edwards; one brother, Graham Carothers; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Milton S. Carothers Ethical Award at Florida State University, the Presbyterian University Center at Florida State University or Big Bend Hospice.

Copies of his Letters and Lessons of Faith may be purchased at the Presbyterian Center, with proceeds benefitting the Presbyterian Center ministry.
