Man seeking new identity here killed in shoot out
By Rose Hooper
A convicted Georgia felon who was attempting to create a new identity for himself in Jackson County opened fire on a Georgia deputy last Tuesday (Aug. 10) and was killed in the encounter.
According to the Cherokee County, Ga., Sheriff’s Office, Frank James Sheridan, 49, was fatally shot by Deputy Ron Hunton during last week’s confrontation just north of Atlanta.
Hunton, who was serving a warrant on Sheridan, was shot in the face and leg during the encounter.
Following a felony conviction earlier this year for aggravated stalking of his ex-wife, Sheridan had been ordered to surrender all firearms, including the .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun used in Tuesday’s shooting.
Capt. Steve Lillard with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said Cherokee County deputies and Georgia State Bureau of Investigation agents searched Sheridan’s rented home at 1298 Mineral Springs Road, as well as two rented storage units.
Among the items recovered were a double-barreled shotgun, a military-style semiautomatic rifle, 400 rounds of ammunition and a bulletproof vest.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Detective Rick Buchanan assisted with the recovery of the items and the investigation.
Sheridan, a former resident of Woodstock, Ga., was using stolen identities to create a new life for himself in Jackson County, according to sheriff’s officials.
