Local enrollment down slightly from last year

Local public school enrollment has dropped slightly since last year, according to attendance figures released Tuesday (Aug. 17).

The total number of students attending Jackson County’s seven schools this year is 3,615, down by 18 from last year’s first-week total of 3,633, said Sarah Davis, school system attendance coordinator.

A school-by-school breakdown follows, with attendance numbers from the 2003-04 school years in parentheses. Attendance figures reflect enrollment in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Blue Ridge – 263 total; 94 high school (262 total; 89 high school).

Cullowhee Valley – 596 (608).

Fairview – 745 (786).

Scotts Creek – 511 (486).

Smokey Mountain Elementary – 425 (441).

Smoky Mountain High – 1,003 (984).

School of Alternatives – 75 (66).
