Football field vandalized

Law enforcement officers are among those surveying the damage caused by vandals Friday night or Saturday morning at the Smoky Mountain High football field. SM Athletic Director Si Simmons said a vehicle apparently came off of N.C. 107, drove up the hill to the stadium and entered the field from the end closest to the gym. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the incident. “They had a purpose,” Simmons said. “They went straight to the middle of the field and did four big doughnuts. The damage was very significant from about the 30 to the 30 and from sideline to sideline.” Capt. Steve Lillard of the Sheriff’s Office said the field sustained approximately $30,000 in damage. The Mustangs’ first three home soccer games – Wednesday against Pisgah, Thursday against Murphy and Monday against Swain – have all been moved to the Jackson County Recreation Center. All games will start at 5 p.m. A soccer game on Aug. 25 will be played at Asheville, and the Cougars will now come to SM on Sept. 29. Thursday’s middle school football game against Rugby was moved to 5 p.m. Wednesday at West Henderson. In what Simmons said is believed to be a related incident, detergent suds were placed in the courtyard pond killing several fish, according to Simmons.
