Construction projects to begin downtown
By Carey King
There’ll be hard hats aplenty in coming days downtown, as Main Street will be paved and Landis Street will get a new storm drain.
Department of Transportation workers plan to begin the paving job Monday, Aug. 23, with work limited to the evening, night and early-morning hours, said DOT assistant resident engineer Ronnie Sutton.
The paving will be done one lane at a time, Sutton said.
All cars must be off Main Street by 9 p.m. Monday, when workers will begin to sweep the road. After 7 p.m. Tuesday, cars will not be allowed to park on the street’s left side, as the left lane will be paved, said DOT district engineer Jonathan Woodard.
The Town of Sylva will begin installation of a storm drain on Landis Street this week or next, depending on the weather and other factors, said Richard McHargue, town manager.
The drain will run under the sidewalk closest to First Baptist Church and tie into an existing drain on Main Street, he said.
Sylva town board members voted Aug. 5 to approve the project. According to Street Committee Chairman Ray Lewis, the drain is necessary to catch stormwater runoff from the parking lot at First United Methodist Church.
Using town labor except for reconstruction of the sidewalk, curb and gutter, the project is expected to cost $26,000, with $13,000 taken from Powell Bill funds. The rest will be paid for by dollars originally set aside for paving Hampton Street, McHargue said.
Of the five streets targeted for paving in the town’s current capital plan, Hampton Street is the highest quality, McHargue said.
