Rescue workers pulled 56-year-old Michael L. Hegman from the demolished cab of his upside-down Fruehauf truck Tuesday morning. Hegman flipped his truck at 7:25 a.m. July 24 on N.C. 23-U.S. 441 on Cowee Mountain. According to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Steve Allred, Hegman was traveling north when he ran off the right shoulder, hit the guard rail and overturned. The Lexington, Ky., man was transported by ambulance to Harris Regional Hospital's emergency room. From there, he was transferred to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where hospital officials said he remained in stable condition at press time. Allred charged Hegman, who was hauling a load of pallets, with exceeding a safe speed. - Herald photo by Rose Hooper
