Eddie Cucumber
Eddie Cucumber, 52, of Cherokee’s Yellowhill community, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in Drama Cemetery.
He was born in Sevierville, Tenn., but had lived most of his life in Cherokee.
Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and Richard Hughes; one daughter, Natasha Cucumber of Cherokee; one son, Chet William Chubonie of Baton Rouge, La.; one sister, Jenny C. Bean of Sylva; and one granddaughter.
Paul McFalls
Paul McFalls, 55, of Brasstown Road, Cullowhee, died Friday, July 9, 2004, in the Philippines after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at Cullowhee Church of God, of which he was a member. The Revs. Pat Farmer, Michael Queen and Steve May officiated. Burial was in Balsam Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Stephens, Scott Ashe, Dustin McFalls, Dennis Luker, Scott Henry and Darrell Luker.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he worked for Luker Brothers Construction. Son of the late Bud and Jessie Wikle McFalls, he was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James McFalls.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Glana Luker McFalls; one son, Paul Lyndon McFalls of Cullowhee; four sisters, Dovie Stephens of Cullowhee, Gail Ashe of Brevard and Clara Nicholson and Judy McFalls, both of Sylva; and two brothers, Ben McFalls of Cullowhee and Terrell McFalls of West Virginia.

Bonnie Cooksey
Bonnie Mildred Cooksey, 92, of Racking Cove Road, Sylva, died Thursday, July 15, 2004.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at Laurel Land Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas, with B.B. Stevens officiating.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 23, at Woodland Church of Christ. Willard Cox and Mark Sparks will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service.
Born in Mineola, Texas, she was a resident of Fort Worth prior to moving to Jackson County in 1986. She was retired from General Dynamics Corp. and was a member of the Church of Christ and was involved in mission work throughout the world.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Cooksey, who died in 1988; one son, Doyle Cooksey; and four brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are one daughter, Evelyn Rigdon of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Jackson County; and six grandchildren.

Polly Buchanan
Polly Dills Buchanan, 74, of Skyland Care Center, Sylva, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 16, at Fairview Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Clifford Parker officiated.
A native of Jackson County, she worked at C.J. Harris Hospital as a nursing aide and was a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Henry and Mae Whitehead Dills.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandy Buchanan; five brothers, Roy, Don, Howard and Fred Dills and Horace Farmer; and two sisters, Catherine “Jo” Dills Queen and Louise Bryson.
Surviving are one daughter, Diane Buchanan of Sylva; one son, James W. Buchanan of Black Mountain; two grandchildren two step grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Bernice Bryant
Bernice Murphy Bryant, 87, of Athens, Ga., died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Grandview Care Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at Athens First Baptist Church. The Rev. Jon Appleton officiated.
A native of Hoschton, Ga., she was the daughter of Albert Daniel Murphy Sr. and Ella Mae Cronic Murphy. She was a member of Athens First Baptist Church, where she was active in the Jenkins Sunday school class and the Women’s Missionary Union, which she served as president for 14 years. She was a member and past president of the Rose and Dahlia Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Garlin “Whitey” Bryant; and three brothers, Albert Daniel Murphy Jr., Perry Lamar Murphy and James Robert Murphy.
Surviving are one son, Jimmy Bryant of Watkinsville, formerly of Jackson County; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

Edward Nelson
Edward Nauen Nelson, 60, Forest Run Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly Friday, July 16, 2004, while jogging near his home.
Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Monday, July 19, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home, Sylva. The Revs. Paul Christy and Phyllis Glahn officiated. Burial was at Bellevue Memorial Park in Grovetown, Ga.
A native of Shelby County, Tenn., he had lived in Moscow, Tenn., for the past 28 years, until recently having moved to Whittier. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired in 1999 after 30 years of service as controller with Smurffitt Stone Container Corp.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Rebecca Evans Nelson; one daughter, Holly Nelson Joiner of Martinez, Ga.; one sister, Betty Rose Simon of Houston, Texas; and one grandson.
