Peggy Bradley
Peggy Sue Galcatcher Bradley, 78, of Cherokee died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Tsali Care Center.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City. The Rev. Steve Phillipi officiated. Burial was at Birdtown Cemetery.
She was born June 6, 1926, in Stilwell, Okla., to the late Lee and Leona Clowd Galcatcher. An enrolled member of the Western Cherokee, she attended Sequoyah Boarding School in Talaquah, Okla., through her senior year of high school and was the salutatorian of her class.
Through Indian Health Service she received LPN training at Lawton (Okla.) Indian Hospital and was licensed as an LPN in 1947. The Indian Health Service placed her at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Cherokee that same year.
In 1963, through Indian Health Service, she went to Albuquerque, N.M., to train as a public health nurse. She worked as a public health nurse at Cherokee for the Public Health Service until her retirement in 1979 after 30 years of service.
She married Charles C. Bradley on July 1, 1949.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died Aug. 25, 2003; five brothers, Billy, Bob, Josh, Tom and Eucha Galcatcher; and two half-sisters, Sally and Minnie.
Surviving are two sons, John L. Bradley and Charles Robert Bradley; two daughters, Susie Haynes and Mary L. Bradley, all of the Qualla community; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Cherokee United Methodist Church or to the Cherokee Tribal EMS.
Tim Nicholson
Tim Nicholson, 43, of Cullowhee, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 9, at Wesleyan Church in Tuckasegee. The Revs. Jeff Powell and Michael Queen officiated. Burial was in Wike Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert and Chris Nicholson, Mike Clark, Johnny Parris, Odell Lovedahl and Everett Sellers.
A native of Jackson County, he was a carpenter by trade. He was a son of Genevieve Nicholson of Cullowhee and the late Manuel Nicholson.
He was preceded in death by one brother, David Ray Nicholson; and one sister, Peggy Hatcher.
Surviving, in addition to his mother; are one daughter, April Dawn Nicholson of Cullowhee; three sisters, Ginger Lovedahl of Dillsboro, Louise Ball of Austin, Texas, and Ann Bryson of Cullowhee; and six brothers, Jimmy of Long Beach, Calif., Bobby and Hutt of Sylva and Andy, Ronnie and Howard, all of Cullowhee.

Mary Higdon
Mary Ellen Buchanan Higdon, 90, of Lexington, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, in Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. The Revs. Clyde Akers and Gary Gibson officiated. Burial was in Forest Hill Memorial Park.
She was born Aug. 14, 1913, in Jackson County to James Arthur Cowan and Aloria Frady Cowan. A homemaker, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Memphis E. Buchanan, who died in 1952; four sons, Herman, Oscar, Clinton and Guy Buchanan; six brothers, Napoleon, Frank, Marcella, Elvin, Ransom and Jimmy Cowan; and three sisters, Minnie Cowan, Martha Carpenter and Anna Deitz.
Surviving are four sons, Kenneth Buchanan of Linwood, Manuel Buchanan of Sylva, and Jesse Buchanan and Carl Buchanan, both of Lexington; three daughters, Bessie Stroud and Joyce Boone, both of Lexington, and Anna Lou Wiggins of Gastonia; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Talmadge Leopard
Talmadge “Busy” Leopard, 73, of Wayehutta Road, Cullowhee, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Johnny Norris, Ernest Ammons, Michael Queen and Roger Stewman officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Doug Leopard, Bobby Leopard, Boyd Leopard, Jonathan Leopard, Jamie Mull and Bobby Griffin.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Brevard Electric as an electrician, was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War, a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church and an avid fisherman. He was a son of the late Dewitt and Minnie Whitmire Leopard.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Leopard; and one sister, Opal Lee Hall.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Louise Watson Leopard; three daughters, Sandra Griffin of Cullowhee, Linda Luker of East LaPorte and Patricia Clark of Topton; two brothers, Gordon Lee Leopard of Marietta, S.C., and John Leopard of Tuckasegee; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. John Connor
John Ralph Connor, 57, of Joe Wilkey Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. Brother Bill Gurskey and the Rev. Sherrill Ammons officiated. Burial was in Queen-Connor Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roger Brooks, Edwin Wilkey, Frank Wilkey, Richard Wiggins, Eddie Cody, Steve Craigg, Tony Stevens, Wayne Brooks, David Collins and Randy Connor.
A native of Caldwell County, he lived in Jackson County most of his life. He was a mechanic with Tuckasegee Mills for more than 15 years, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Long Branch Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, choir director and youth leader. He was a son of the late Ralph John and Aileen Holsclaw Connor.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Estes; one sister, Patsy Estes; and one grandson.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Dorothy Medlin Connor; one daughter, Shannon Gail Brown of Tuckasegee; one son, Abe Connor of Waynesville; two sisters, Sue Stafflebach and Doris Estes, both of Sylva; one brother, Jerry Connor of Lenoir; and five grandchildren.
Cecily Hill
Cecily “Dani” Hill, 16, of Cherokee’s Big Cove community died Wednesday, July 7, 2004.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 9, at Straight Fork Baptist Church. The Revs. Charles Ray Ball and James “Bo” Parris officiated. Burial was in the family cemetery.
A lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was a daughter of Allen Hill and Katie Johnson, both of Cherokee. She just finished the 10th grade at Cherokee High School and was a charter member of the Traditional Dancers with the Anikuwih Dancers.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are one sister, Tara Pheasant McCoy of Cherokee; paternal grandmother, Yonnie Hill of Cherokee; and paternal great-grandmother, Rachel Watty of Cherokee.

James Moon
James Edward “Jim Ed” Moon, 76, of Burlington died Friday, July 9, 2004, at White Oak Nursing Home after a long illness.
Funeral services were held at Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 11.
He was born April 22, 1928, in Cullowhee’s East LaPorte community. He lived in Sylva until 1948 and in Burlington for the remainder of his life. He was a son of James Hartwell and Ethel Louise Moon. He worked at Velt’s Cafe, Kayser Roth, General Electric of Mebane, from which he retired, and Biscuitville of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret “Jo” Reagan Moon; one brother, George Alvin Moon; and one sister, Mary Louise Clements.
Surviving are one brother, Hugh D. Moon of Sylva.

Janie Wood
Janie Irene Wood, 78, of Asheville, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at the Laurels of Greentree in Asheville.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Rev. Ron Brown officiated. Burial followed at Ashelawn Gardens.
A native of Jackson County, she was born Aug. 12, 1925 and was a daughter of the late Joseph Thomas Wood and Vergie Pressley Wood Lunsford. She lived in Balsam until 1948, when she moved to Asheville, where she worked as a waitress at different cafes. She retired from Burlington Industries in 1976 and was a member of Balsam Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Oscar William Wood.
Surviving are one half-sister, Barbara Jean Wood of Gastonia; and five half-brothers, Carl Wood of Candler, James Milas Wood of Waynesville, Joseph Thomas Wood, Wesley Wood and Hershel Wood.
Francile Waters
Francile “Fran” Keith Waters, 79, of Taylor, Ark., died Monday, July 12, 2004, at Magnolia City Hospital.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at Woodland Church of Christ in Sylva.
She was born Jan. 22, 1925, in McKamie, Ark., to the late Herbert V. and Katie E. Walker Keith.
She attended Taylor, Ark., schools grades 1-12, graduating in 1943. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy prior to high school graduation and began active duty in 1943. She was assigned to Naval Intelligence during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.
She attended Harding University in Searcy, Ark., and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1949 from the University of Mississippi. She earned a masters of arts in education in 1963 from Western Carolina University. She retired from WCU in 1982 as professor emeritus of home economics.
She was a 50-year member of the American Legion and was involved in the N.C. Legion prior to moving to Arkansas in 2003. She was a volunteer with Jackson County Hospice. A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, she was a member of Woodland Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Melanie Lauri Waters Gifford, who died in 2003.
Surviving are her husband, Leland R. Waters Jr.; two brothers, Ernest Keith of Nacogdoches, Texas and Roy Keith of Taylor; and two sisters, Mary Jarnagin and Betty Russell, both of Magnolia.
Memorials may be made to Western Carolina University Foundation, Cullowhee, NC 28723 for scholarships for students attending the College of Applied Science.
