School board seats will be decided in Tuesday’s voting - Jackson County voters will elect two school board members when they go to the polls Tuesday, July 20. While the election is a primary for all other offices, it will serve as the general election for the non-partisan school board seats. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m....


Road study to include focus on 107 traffic - Driven by comments from both the audience and its members, Jackson County’s transportation task force Monday (July 12) agreed the group would have a dual focus: an immediate look at mounting traffic problems on busy N.C. 107 between the Business 23/107 and N.C. 116/107 intersections along with a long-range study of the entire Dillsboro to Cullowhee corridor....


WCU adds traffic circle - Western Carolina University’s reconstructed main entrance at the intersection of N.C. 107 and Centennial Drive has been reopened to automobile traffic. The new entrance differs from the old one in that there are now two left turn lanes coming into the entrance from N.C. 107 north, a traffic circle has been built in front of Western’s Robinson Administration Building, and there is a new left turn lane for the Robinson Building parking lot....


Friday’s storm causes sewage spill - The severe storm that hit Sylva on Friday (July 9) caused  the discharge of 84,000 gallons of untreated wastewater from Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority’s treatment plant on North River Road, said TWSA Director Hugh Montgomery. “The power went out around 6:30 p.m., and our auxiliary generator kicked on,” he said. “The generator ran for four hours, then it shut down, probably due to high-engine temperature.”

Attorney Jones, arsonist Ritsema plead guilty in Superior Court - Defendants in two high profile cases entered guilty pleas last week in Jackson County Superior Court. Tom Jones, a disbarred Sylva attorney, pleaded guilty to 14 counts of embezzlement. Kelly Ritsema, a former Western Carolina University student charged with setting three fires in Scott Dorm, pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted first-degree arson. Judge Clarence Horton continued sentencing for the 60-year-old Jones until Oct. 11....


Library task force to discuss architect’s site evaluations today - Members of the Library Task Force will meet at 3 p.m.today (Thursday) in Room A-227 of the Justice Center to discuss Sylva architect Odell Thompson’s recent evaluations of the group’s top three picks for a new library site. As requested by the task force, Thompson assessed an area on Grindstaff Cove near Jackson Plaza Shopping Center, land near Bicentennial Park owned by the Mack Hooper family, and the old Sylva School site in Mark Watson Park....


Indian dancers - Western Carolina University will host an evening of international song, dance and cultural heritage Tuesday, July 20, as part of the 21st annual Folkmoot USA festival. Dancers from India (above) will be featured along with groups from Mexico and Turkey during the 7:30 p.m. performance in Coulter Building’s recital hall. Tickets are available from the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, 586-2155, or on campus from 227-7494 or 227-3440. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
