MARY BLANTON of Sylva sent us a note expressing her thanks to the Sylva Police Department for their assistance during Sylva’s Fourth of July celebration. Blanton attended the event with a handicapped friend, and police officers helped with access and even pushed the wheelchair-bound friend up toward the Post Office so he could have a good view of the fireworks. “Our police officers so often receive negative criticism for actions they do as part of their duty,” Blanton wrote. “I wanted everyone to know that they have a dimension of compassion and caring that far exceeds any expectation. My hat is off to them.”
WE ALSO HAD A NOTE from Dessie Gilmore, formerly of Webster, who has moved south to live with her daughter. “While I am enjoying the Florida sunshine, I do miss all of my friends in Webster,” Gilmore wrote. Friends can write to her at her new address: Dessie Gilmore, 6002 Paul Buchman Highway, Plant City, Fla., 33565.

The event gets under way with registration beginning at 9 a.m. For more information, contact Western’s Office of Admissions at 227-7317.
BEAR LAKE RESERVE, a second-home community under development in Tuckasegee, has attracted buyers from as near as Cashiers and as far away as Chicago and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In its first offering of cottages, developer Centex Destination Properties sold all 41 cottages in just eight hours at an offering event at the site earlier this month. “We could have welcomed even more new cottage owners, given the high level of interest,” said Chuck Hall, Bear Lake Reserve project manager. “The beauty and serenity of this site, with a gem of a lake, world class amenities and spectacular mountain views, make this a very desirable location for those who seek a getaway in the cool mountains of western North Carolina.” Cottages sold were priced from the mid-$300,000s to mid-$400,000s. Construction of first-offering cottages has already begun. Ultimately, there will be a total of 99 cottages and 133 building lots sold during the first phase of the project. The 2,100-acre gated community is located along the shores of Bear Creek Lake.
