SCC ranked superior on state report card
“Experience excellence,” Southwestern Community College’s new slogan, was proved true when the college learned it had received a superior rating on the North Carolina Community College System report card.
The rating is based on 12 performance measures that document how well the state’s 58 community colleges serve their students and local business and industry.
“This achievement is a direct result of dedication to our students and community,” said Cecil Groves, SCC president. “SCC is committed to providing our community with a top-quality education, and we are thrilled to receive endorsement of the job we’re doing.”
In the report, SCC was recognized as being one of only four community colleges in the state to have 100 percent of its college transfer graduates experience success at the university level.
“This achievement speaks volumes about what is happening in our classrooms,” said Gene Couch, vice president of instructional services. “Our students are graduating with an academic foundation that prepares them for a successful experience at the university level, and that is a direct result of our faculty and staff’s dedication.”
The College also received 100 percent success in satisfaction with business- and industry-customized training.
“Anything I have asked for with customized training, SCC has found a way to do it,” said Bob Benson, manufacturing manager at Consolidated Metco in Bryson City, a company that uses SCC training programs for its new employees. “SCC has done a superior job in making our new people feel comfortable through its ‘train the trainer’ course. This class is going to take us a step further in industry and in ensuring our people are comfortable and ready to perform.”
Colleges are scored in the following areas: progress of basic-skills students, pass rates on licensure/certification exams by first-time test-takers, goal completion for completers, employment status of graduates, performance of college transfer students, passing rates in developmental courses, success rate of developmental students in subsequent college-level courses, curriculum student retention and graduation rates, employer satisfaction, business/industry satisfaction with customized training and program unduplicated enrollment.
The performance measures began in 2001 as the result of a mandate from the General Assembly to ensure strong public accountability from the state’s community colleges. To view SCC’s report card, visit www.southwesterncc.edu.
