Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

David Rinehart

David Rinehart, 58, of Green Leaf Drive, Sylva, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Cecil Frady officiated.

He was a native of Washington, D.C., and had lived in Jackson County for the past six months, moving from Sarasota, Fla. He was a retired Washington, D.C., police officer and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a son of the late Louis and Pauline Rinehart.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Becky DeStefano Rinehart; four sons, John Rinehart of Kansas City, Mo., Jay Rinehart and Anthony Rinehart, both of Sarasota, Fla., and Wesley Rinehart of Fort Bragg; two sisters, Gloria Lau of Chance, Md., and Shirley Baker of Mount Airy, Md.; and five grandsons.

Minnie Smith

Minnie Queen Smith, 78, of Cherokee’s Painttown community, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 1, at Cherokee United Methodist Church. The Revs. James “Bo” Parris and Steven Phillippi officiated. Burial was at Queen Family Cemetery.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee. Daughter of the late Jasper and Luzene Reed Queen, she was a basket maker and worked as a cook for Boundry Tree for several years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Allen Smith; one daughter, Mary Ann Queen; two sisters, Annie Queen Powell and Eva Queen Wolfe; and three brothers, Blaine Queen, Jessie Queen and Tom Queen.

Surviving are two sisters, Kina Littlejohn and Myrtle Bird, both of Cherokee; two brothers, Lewis and Henry Queen, both of Cherokee; one daughter, Lucinda Queen Taylor; five sons, Allen Boyd Queen, Abraham Queen, Lawrence Queen, Wesley Queen and Kevin Brian Smith; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Joyce Denton

Joyce Ballew Denton, 76, Sylva, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, in Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 4, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Roy Burnette officiated. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 5, at Prentiss Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklin. The Rev. Josh Brooks officiated. Pallbearers were Marty Ensley, Steven Ensley, Eric Hall, Casey Hall, Wesley Hall and Roland Mock.

A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Paul R. and Lula Stiles Ballew. She was retired from Chasm Inc. after 36 years of service and was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Howard “Shorty” Denton, who died in 2003; two infants; two sisters, Bunea and Mary Lou; and one brother, Burlin.

Surviving are three daughters, Shirley D. Ensley of Sylva and Judy Shope and Connie Hall, both of Franklin; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Charlie Hoell

Charlie Hoell Jr., 77, of Otto, died Monday, June 28, 2004, in a Sylva care center.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 1, at Woodlawn Cemetery. The Rev. Ronnie Mitchem officiated.

A native of Martin County, he was a son of the late Charlie Hoell Sr. and Martha Whichard Howell. He retired from Newport News Ship Building Co., with 16 years services as a sheet metal mechanic. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Anne Crisp Hoell; three daughters, Sharon Y. Cross of Webster, Lori H. Winder of Hampton, Va., and Lisa H. Jackson of King George, Va.; three sons, Charlie Hoell III of Williamsburg, Va., Joey Hoell of Webster and Gary Hoell of Hampton; one brother, Henry Hoell of Greenville; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Angel Home Health and Hospice, 170 Church St., Franklin, NC 28723.

John Connor of Joe Wilkey Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Kenneth Mark Nicholson of Tuckasegee died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at his residence.

Lenora Rogers

Lenora C. Rogers, 81, of Sylva’s Dillardtown community, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at Skyland Care Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Mike Farmer officiated. Burial was in Thomas Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Rogers, Greg Plemmons, Allen Farmer, Justin Cochran, Sam Horn and Harrison Gunter.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Daughter of the late Paul and Nora Tritt Cooper, she was a cook at Sylva-Webster High School.

Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Brinkman of Sylva; two sons, James Rogers of Sylva and Sam Rogers of Prattville, Ala.; four sisters, Estelle Gibson of Whittier, Louise Maney of Lakeland, Fla., Beluah Kinsland of Whittier and Ditts Snyder of Lexington; one brother, Earl Cooper of Whittier; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Phyllis Lee

Phyllis E. Lee, 81, of Red Barn Lane, Sylva, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Private services were held Wednesday, July 7, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, of which she was a member. The  Rev. Michael Jones officiated. The family will receive friends Saturday, July 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

A native of Chicago, she had lived in Jackson County for the past 54 years. Daughter of the late Phillip Franklin and Adelaide Bump Lee, she rented cottages for Rolling Green Rentals and had been a bookkeeper with First Union National Bank.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Phillip F. Lee Jr.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
