CITY LIGHTS owner Joyce Moore expresses her thanks to the town of Sylva and Sylva Police Department for their support during Saturday’s Tom Robbins reading. A crowd numbering close to 400 packed Spring Street to hear the best-selling author, and Moore said everything went smoothly. About half of the people who attended were from outside of Jackson County and most had never been to Sylva before, she said. “I think they left with a positive impression of Sylva,” Moore said. “I think it will have a lasting effect.” City Lights’ 18th anniversary is this week, Moore said, and having their first-ever outdoor reading and street festival go so successfully is a “great way to celebrate.”

GEORGE HOOPER, owner of Sylva Tire Co., retired Wednesday (June 30) after almost 30 years at the store.

KEN’S GROCERY in Tuckasegee will celebrate its 25th anniversary July 4, although owners Ken and Norma Chastain will close the store to mark the holiday.

He has participated in various civic organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, where he served as vice president and president. Most recently he has been secretary/treasurer for the Democrat Men’s Club.

A YARD SALE will be held at the Tuckasegee VFW Building Saturday, July 3, beginning at 8 a.m. The sale is a benefit to raise money for Gentry Trantham, who is facing heart surgery at Duke.

THE CULLOWHEE Class of 1969 will hold its 35th reunion Saturday, Aug. 14. If you know of a classmate who has not received information, please write to Cindy Sumerel, P.O. Box 511, Four Oaks, NC 27524.
