Edna Pressley
Edna Dorothy Bumgarner Pressley, 86, of Shirley Pressley Road, Glenville, died Friday, June 25, 2004, at Fidelia Eckerd Living Center in Highlands after a long period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at Hamburg Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Matt Ledbetter and J.C. Robinson officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, she lived in Cullowhee’s Speedwell community and in the Norton and Cedar Creek communities of Glenville. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a skilled seamstress, cook and gardener and grew African violets.
She was preceded in death by her father, P. Ray Bumgarner; her mother, Lela Taylor Bumgarner; one sister, Georgia Bumgarner; and two brothers, Frank Bumgarner and Fred Bumgarner. Edna was the widow of Lewis Arnold Pressley, who died in 1992.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley R. Pressley Eldridge of Brevard; two sons, Scotty A. Pressley and Robert L. Pressley, both of Glenville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Bob Crawford

William Robert “Bob” Crawford, Sr., 80, of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in a Waynesville care center.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Dr. Joe Yelton officiated. The East LaPorte Masonic Lodge conducted graveside services.
He was born in Haywood County, but lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church and was a retired welder. Son of the late John Edgar and Jeanette Mehaffey Crawford, he was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Crawford.
Surviving are one son, William Robert Crawford, Jr. of Bedford, Texas; one daughter, Janis C. Extine of Cullowhee; one sister, Joan C. Haskett of Horse Shoe; one brother, John Cecil “Pete” Crawford of Indiana; and four grandchildren.

James Norton
James Henry Norton, 66, of Fletcher, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Mike Moore and Earl Holden officiated. Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
He was a native and former resident of Jackson County and a graduate of Cullowhee High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam and was retired from Ball Glass Manufacturing Plant after 30 years. He was a son of the late Frank Norton and the late Wilma Smith Bishop.
He was preceded in death by one son, Mike Norton.
Surviving are one daughter, Kim Renner of Greeneville, Tenn.; one sister, Virginia Grady of Morganton; three brothers, Edwin Norton and Ray Faircloth, both of Sylva, and Harold Norton of Hayesville; and two grandchildren.
Sara Ivey

Sara Pennington Ivey, 93, of 254 Cane Creek Road, Sylva, formerly of Thomasville, died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at her daughter’s home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 27, at J.C. Green Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville. The Rev. David Best officiated. Burial followed in Holly Hills Cemetery, Thomasville. Pallbearers were Timothy Turner, James Dudley, Jason Youngblood, Brian Keith, Richard Youngblood, and Bobby Keith.
She was born April 7, 1911, the youngest daughter of the Rev. J.J. Pennington and Margaret Ann Pennington. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Thomasville and belonged to the Philathea Sunday School class. An avid gardener, she belonged to the Bent Twig Garden Club. She was a seamstress and quilter. Employed by Wrenn Manufacturing in Thomasville, she was a quality inspector for many years. She also worked at Fremont and Kaybe Hosiery Mills.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George T. Ivey; two daughters, Martha P. Dudley and Sara Joan Turner; an infant grandson; and infant great-granddaughter.
Surviving are one daughter, Georgia I. Hickes of Sylva; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Clyde Hoyle
Clyde Hoyle, 68, of Luftee Lake Road in Whittier’s Ela community, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 27, 2004, in Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 29, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. David Burch and Robert Clegg officiated. Burial was held in Lewis Cemetery in Whittier. Pallbearers were Alvin, Simon, Chuckles, Allen, Luther Jr. and Colt Hoyle.
A native of Swain County, he was a mechanic, who worked in West Virginia in the gas caverns. He was a foreman of Sea Breeze Water Bed Factory in Georgia and was a son of the late Luther and Mary Williamson Hoyle.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Anne Gunter Hoyle; one daughter, Clyanne Hoyle of the home; three sons, Estal Hoyle of Bryson City, Luther Hoyle of Whittier and Greg Hoyle of Cherokee; five brothers, Glenn and Michael Hoyle, both of Whittier, and Wade, Monroe and Jim Hoyle, all of Bryson City; two sisters, Mildred Lunsford of Hendersonville and Lucille Padgett of Burgan; and 11 grandchildren.
Lucille McMahan
Lucille Sanders McMahan, 83, of Carter Road, Franklin, died Friday, June 25, 2004, at Angel Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, at Watauga Baptist Church. The Revs. Wesley Price, David Lee Williams and Rick Potts officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Mitchell Bishop, Bobby Sanders, Adam Cochran, Jason Cochran, Dennis Johnson, Doug Johnson and Curt Johnson.
She was a native of Macon County and daughter of the late Mitchell and Rose Brendle Sanders. She was a restaurant cook and was a member of Watauga Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 15 years, Carl McMahan; two daughters, Frankie Ruff of Sylva and Patsy Deitz of Webster and Honduras; two sons, Carson Jones of Franklin and Lawny Jones of Waynesville; four stepdaughters, Margaret Long of Brevard, Nancy Boyett of Collins, Ga., Ann Kirby of Calhoun, Ga. and Helen Gagnon of Massachusetts; three stepsons, Herman Allison of Columbia, S.C., Clinton Allison of Clarkesville, Ark., and James Allison of Washington; three sisters, Elsie Sanders, Vern Sanders and Ann Sanders, all of Franklin; 40 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.
