Sylva Herald advertising staff wins statewide awards
By Lynn Hotaling
The Sylva Herald’s advertising staff captured a total of five awards recently in the N.C. Press Association’s Best Ad contest. Awards were presented June 11 in Research Triangle Park.
Advertising Manager Margo Gray won two individual awards – a first and a third – and shared a second place with Herald ad staffer Kelly Timco. Timco won a third-place individual award, and Sherry Peek captured a second.
Gray placed first in the Best Use of Spot Color category for an advertisement she designed for the Smart Roads Coalition. Gray’s other award came in the same category for a Bessie May and Co. ad. She and Timco picked up a second place in Best Use of Full Color for a Village Studio ad that was part of a Business Spotlight page.

Gray’s first-place ad was especially satisfying, she said, because it helped a community group achieve an important goal.
The ad was purchased by a grassroots group seeking to halt planning and construction of a proposed four-lane bypass. The full-page ad centered around the image of a stop sign, which was colored bright red.
Through the ad, petitions and community meetings, the group was able to convince local government and transportation officials to postpone the project pending the recommendation of a multi-agency task force.
Timco’s individual win was for an ad he created for Western Carolina Chrysler Plymouth Dodge, and Peek’s award was for a Hollifield’s Jewelers ad.
Herald Publisher Jim Gray said he was pleased by the advertising department’s strong showing in the statewide competition.
“These awards say a lot about the caliber of ad support our newspaper is able to offer its retail customers,” he said.
“I think our local businesses really benefit from the expertise of our award-winning advertising staff,” the publisher said. “I’m really proud of the good job they do every week and happy they’ve received this recognition.”
