Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Sara Jones

Sara Stamper Jones, 96, of Cherokee, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, in Cherokee Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, in Ned Stamper Cemetery in Cherokee. Ray Kinsland officiated.

She was a native of Jackson County and a retired translator of the Indian language for Cherokee Hospital. She attended Rock Springs Baptist Church. She was the wife the late Edwin Jones and daughter of the late Ned and Sally Ann Crowe Stamper.

Surviving are two daughters, Wynn Jones of Cherokee and Sally Ann Piper of Bath, Mich.; two sons, Leon Jones of Cherokee and William Jones of Illinois; and three grandchildren.

John Jones

John Ray Jones, 64, of Cabe Road, Sylva, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, at Old Savannah Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. David Souderes and Johnny Norris officiated. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Bates, Brad Morgan, Jimmy Melton, Dustin and Jason Buchanan and Danny Hall. Honorary pallbearers were Levi, Samantha and Travis Buchanan, Bill Green, Dr. R.F. Hanich and staff, Dr. Deweese and staff and all church members.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired as a truck driver with Shell Oil Co. He was a son of the late Roy and Swannie Mills Jones.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jacinta Sharron Jones; one sister, Belle Cogdill; and one brother, Guy Jones.

Surviving are his wife, Jimmie Sue Cabe Jones; one daughter, Jennifer Rae Jones of Sylva; one son, Johnny Buchanan of Sylva; four sisters, Mary Ann Hall, Billie Joe Buchanan and Betty Wilkes, all of Sylva, and Ida Mae Holden of Bryson City; and three brothers, Noel Jones of Robbinsville, Bruce Jones of Sylva and Ronnie  Buchanan of Sylva.

Raymond Ross

Raymond Austin Ross, 29, of Cherokee’s Yellowhill community, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, in Birdtown.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, at Yellowhill Baptist Church. The Rev. James “Red” Bradley and Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in the Ross Family Cemetery.

A native of Denver, Colo., he had lived in Cherokee for most of his life. Son of John Robert and Evelyn Fink Ross of Cherokee, he was a self-employed home builder.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one daughter, Maggie Mae Ross of Cherokee; one sister, Michelle Ross; one brother, Jonathan Peyton Ross; and paternal grandfather, Bob Ross.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Emory Dillard

Emory Lee “Cub” Dillard Jr., 74, of Estero Road, Waynesville died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, at the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. The Rev. Bob Dyer officiated.

He was a native of Jackson County and was a son of the late Emory Lee and Mae Godfrey Dillard. He was an engineer, having worked at Dayco for many years and retired in 1986 from Bandag. He was a member of Cornerstone Fellowship Church and a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Woodrow and Harrison Dillard; and one sister, Elizabeth Babson.

Surviving are his wife, Wendy Donald Dillard; one daughter, Carolyn Lea Bolton, of Athens, Ala.; two sons, Lynn Wray Dillard of Florence, Ala., and Mark Alan Dillard of Bristol, Tenn.; two stepsons, Warren Medley, and Trent Medley, both of South Africa; one sister, Ruby Lee Haynes of Asheville; four grandchildren; and three step- grandchildren.

Richard Green

Richard Noah Green, 77, of Whittier, died Friday, June 19, 2004, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City. The Revs. Harvey Cass, Arvil Nations and Matthew Cunningham officiated. Burial was in Thomas Cemetery.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. A native of Arcadia, Fla., he had lived in Jackson County since 1989 and attended Bryson City Church of God. He was the son of the late Alonzo and Sarah Smith Green.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Ronnie Green.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Donnie Norton; two daughters, Roxine Wilson and Linda Santjer of Bradenton, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Edmund Corbin

Edmund Corbin, 76, of Laurel Knob Road, Cashiers, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 20, at Hamburg Baptist Church. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Matt Ledbetter officiated. Burial was in Norton Cemetery with military rites conducted by Jimmy Dillard VFW Post 10685 and Sylva American Legion Post 104

He was born in Cashiers and was the oldest son of the late Alta Pressley and Preaulo Corbin. He retired from Cashiers Plastic, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Jimmy Dillard VFW Post 10685 and a member of Hamburg Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Corbin.

Surviving are his second wife, Elizabeth Grant Corbin; two daughters, Rachael Ruth Knight of Stockbridge, Ga., and Lisa Annette Tiller of LaGrange, Ga; three sons, Edmund Shirley Corbin of Seneca, S.C., Calvin Eugene Corbin of Moreland, Ga., and Tommy Lee Corbin of Hagansville, Ga.; one stepson, Edward Grant of Cashiers; two stepdaughters, Katherine Roberts and Sandra Crowe, both of Waynesville; three brothers, Robert Corbin of Angier, Phillip Corbin of Cathlamet, Wash., and George Corbin of Westminster, S.C.;  four sisters, Katherine Monteith, Lorena Beasley, Mary Allen and Donna Houston, all of Cashiers; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hamburg Baptist Church.

Virginia Grant

Virginia Antonio Lorenzo Grant, 57, of Cherokee’s Piney Grove community died Friday, June 18, 2004, in a Buncombe County hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, of which she was a member. Bishop Ellison Rudd officiated. Burial was in Catolster Family Cemetery.

Born into the Bitterwater Clan for the Meadow Clan, she was a native of New Mexico and had lived in Swain County for the past 30 years. She was an artisan and a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband of 35 years, General Grant; two sons, Ernest Grant and Antonio Grant, both of Cherokee; one stepdaughter, Danielle Poncho of Elton, La.; six sisters, Nancy Henio, Ethel Lee, Angie Lee, Wilhemina Begay, Bernice Coho and Isabel Ortiz, all of New Mexico; six brothers, Chemicho Earicho, Frankie Earicho, Cecil Earicho, Sullivan Earicho and Ronald Lorenzo, all of New Mexico, and Lewis Lorenzo of Mississippi; and 10 grandchildren.

Oma Hall

Oma Robbins Hall, 81, of Waynesville, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in the Brian Center in Waynesville.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Larry Bryson officiated. Burial was in Keener Cemetery.

She was a native of Wise County, Va., and lived in Haywood County for a short period of time. She was a daughter of the late Isaac Wilson and Elizabeth Jones Robbins.

She was preceded in death by one son, Kyle Hall; two brothers; two sisters; one granddaughter; and one great-grandchild.

Surviving are four daughters, Marie Parton and Patsy Killian, both of Hickory, Omalea Bowman of Griffin, Ga., and Ada Taylor Horne of Sylva; two sons, James Hall of Lantana, Fla., and Eddie Hall of Loxachatte, Fla.; one sister, Ida Stapleton of Norton, Va.; one brother, Noah Robbins of Lenoir; 29 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Richard Catolster

Richard “Big Man” Catolster, 55, of Cherokee’s Birdtown community, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at his niece’s residence in Yellowhill.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at Cherokee United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. James “Bo” Parris and James “Red” Bradley officiated. Burial was in Catolster Family Cemetery.

Son of the late John Taylor and Melinda Catolster, before his illness he worked for the Tee Pee Restaurant as a cook for more than 30 years.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William Edward Catolster; and one sister, Esther Catolster Abel.

Surviving are two sons, James Edward Toineeta and Kevin Richard Catolster; one sister, Maggie C. Armachain of Cherokee; three half-sisters, Sally Smoker, Rosie Salizar and Nannie Hornbuckle, all of Cherokee; three half-brothers, Marvin John Taylor, Elisha Ray Taylor and Ricky Joe Taylor, all of Cherokee; and several grandchildren.

Frances Crumpler

Frances “Pat” Daves Crumpler, 79, of Whiteside Cove Road, Highlands, formerly of Kannapolis, died Tuesday, July 15, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord following a short period of declining health.

A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Kannapolis. The Rev. Jimmy Norred officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery in China Grove.

She was born Aug. 13, 1924, in Rowan County to the late F.R. Daves Sr. and Anna Hefner Daves. She was a graduate of J.W. Cannon High School, Montreat College, Western Carolina University and Duke University School of Nursing. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Highlands, where she served on the altar guild. She was a volunteer at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. She had earlier been employed by the VA Medical Centers in Salisbury and New Orleans for 20 years and later retired from the Smoky Mountain Mental Health Center in Cullowhee. She was a supporter of the Humane Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Crumpler, who died in 1949; three brothers, Dewey Daves, Leonard Daves and F.R. Daves; and one sister, Myrtle Daves.

Surviving are two brothers, F.J. Daves and Roland Daves, both of Kannapolis; and one sister, Elsie D. Tilley of Kannapolis.

Ray Bagwell

Ray Junior Bagwell, 79, of Icard, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 15, 2004,, at Valdese General Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 17, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese. The Rev. Coley Bryant officiated. Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Cliffside.

He was born July 5, 1924, in Cleveland County to the late Joe S. Bagwell and Hester McCombs Bagwell. He was a retired carpenter and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3447 in Gaffney, S.C.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Hoyle Edward Bagwell; one sister, Hesterleen Bagwell; and one half-brother, Joe T. Bagwell.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanette Ballew Bagwell; one sister, Hazel B. Davis of Gaffney, S.C.; and one half-sister, Daisey Allen of Farmington, N.M.

Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese was in charge of arrangements.

William Russell

William Travis Russell Jr., infant son of William Travis Sr. and Sonia M. Russell of Cashiers, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at Evett Cemetery.

Surviving, in addition to the parents, are his maternal grandparents, Robert and Delfina Morales of Cashiers; great-grandparents, Socorro and Enrique Rivas and Felipe and Francisco Morales, all of Mexico; paternal grandparents, James and Linda Russell of Cashiers; and paternal great-grandparents, William and Univee Bryson of Cashiers.
