Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Virginia Barker

Virginia “Granny” Barker, 92, Sutton Branch Road, Sylva, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at Old Savannah Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. David Souderes and Clifford Parker officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers

A native of Rutherford County and the last of five children of the late William H. and Louise Hanon, she lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was the former piano player at Old Savannah Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Barker, who died in 1996; and two sons, Doyle and Thomas Dewey Barker.

Surviving are one daughter, Clara Belle Martin of Pacolet, S.C.; three sons, Freeman A. Barker of Waynesville, Marcus Barker of Sylva and Donald Barker of Pacolet, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John Jones

John Ray Jones, 64, of Cabe Road, Sylva, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, at Old Savannah Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. David Souderes and Clifford Parker officiated. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Bates, Brad Morgan, Jimmy Melton, Dustin and Jason Buchanan and Danny Hall. Honorary pallbearers were Levi, Samantha and Travis Buchanan, Bill Green, Dr. R.F. Hanich and staff, Dr. Deweese and staff and all church members.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired as a truck driver with Shell Oil Co. He was a son of the late Roy and Swannie Mills Jones.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jacinta Sharron Jones; one sister, Belle Cogdill; and one brother, Guy Jones.

Surviving are his wife, Jimmie Sue Cabe Jones; one daughter, Jennifer Rae Jones of Sylva; one son, Johnny Buchanan of Sylva; four sisters, Mary Ann Hall, Billie Joe Buchanan and Betty Wilkes, all of Sylva, and Ida Mae Holden of Bryson City; and three brothers, Noel Jones of Robbinsville, Bruce Jones of Sylva and Ronnie  Buchanan of Sylva.

Memorials may be made to Old Savannah Baptist Church, c/o Ronnie Buchanan, P.O. Box 59, Dillsboro, NC 28725.

William Webb

William Burton Webb Jr., 73, of Pumpkintown Road, Sylva, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Zion Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Steve Webb and Wesley Hooper will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wade Guffey, Ronnie Webb, Bobby Webb, Bobby Rogers, David Hall and Ron Elkins.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a construction worker, a self-employed carpenter and a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. He was a son of the late William Burton Webb Sr. and Mamie Trantham Webb.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Pearl Russell Webb; one daughter, Barbara Jean Hurst of Franklin; one son, William John Webb of Sylva; four sisters, Ethel Mae of Sylva, Betty and Mary of Franklin and Cordelia of Ohio; one brother, George of Gastonia; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Kenneth Patterson

Kenneth Dewey Patterson, 60, of Old Cullowhee Highway, Sylva, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, in Tsali Health Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 14, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Marie Middleton and Gene Harris officiated. Burial was held in Bedford, Va.

A native of Bedford, Va., he had lived in Sylva the last six years. He was a retired store owner and operator and son of the late Jack and Eugena McFalls Patterson. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Sunrise House of Worship.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Enloe Patterson; one daughter, Kelly Lynn Mitchell of Bedford, Va.; one son, Kenneth Patterson Jr. of Bedford, Va.; two sisters, Joyce Laughlin and Carolyn Faye Shaner, both of Bedford, Va.; three brothers, Jack, David and Claude, all of Bedford, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Sunrise House of Worship Building Fund, 474 Sunrise Park, Sylva, NC 28779.

Oma Robbins

Oma Robbins of Sylva died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in the Brian Center in Waynesville.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Anna Swayney

Anna Marie Swayney, 63, of Cherokee’s Big Cove community died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Tsali Care Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Straight Fork Baptist Church. The Rev. Charles Ray Ball officiated. Burial was in Swayney Family Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Morgan and Amanda Driver Calhoun and wife of the late John Hubert Swayney.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Darren Swayney and Thurman “Chunky” Swayney; and one brother, Robert Calhoun.

Surviving are one son, Bruce Swayney of Cherokee; one daughter, Pat Swayney of Cherokee; one stepson, Johnny E. Swayney of Cherokee; one stepdaughter, Barbara Hahner of Delta, Pa.;  two sisters, Stacy Lambert and Lucille Cucumber, both of Cherokee; one brother, John Calhoun of Cherokee; and one granddaughter.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Robinson

Mary Catherine Barger Robinson, 46, of Ashbourne Drive, Gastonia died Wednesday, June 9, 2004.

Funeral service were held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 11, at Parkwood Baptist Church in Gastonia, of which she was a member. The Revs. Jeff Long and Everett Thomas officiated. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 12, in Fairview Gardens Memorial Cemetery in Sylva.

She was the daughter of Ora Whitson Barger and the late Ralph Barger. A native of Sylva, she was a graduate of Western Carolina University and had worked for Duke Energy for more than 20 years.

Surviving are her husband, Michael Robinson; mother, Ora Whitson Barger of Sylva; one stepdaughter, Amy Robinson of Gastonia; one stepson, Brad Robinson of Greensboro; and one brother, Norris Barger of Brevard.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 550, Charlotte, NC 28210.

C.A. Bryson

C.A. Bryson, 81, of Harold Street, Sylva, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 11, at East Sylva Baptist Church. The Revs. Charles Dean, Sherrill Ammons and Terry Jenkins officiated. Burial was in Parris Cemetery with military rites conducted by Sylva American Legion Post 104.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Harris Regional Hospital as a custodian, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and member of Wilkesdale Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Arthur and Beulah Stewman Bryson.

He was preceded in death by one brother, R.L. Bryson.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Estella West Bryson; two sons, Charles A. Bryson and David D. Bryson, both of Sylva; two sisters, Violet Bowers of Sylva and Dottie Bryson of Newport News, Va.; two brothers, Jim Bryson of Belmont and H.C. Bryson of Sylva; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gabriella Bradley

Gabriella Faith Bradley, infant daughter of Brent and Lucinda Bradley of Muncie, Ind., died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Ball Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service was held at Gardens of Memory Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 29.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Blanche Bradley; and great-grandfather, Ira Bradley.

Surviving, in addition to her parents; are twin sister, Sophia Marie Bradley; paternal grandfather, Billy Bradley of Charlotte; and maternal grandparents, Johnny and Patricia Nations of Sylva.

Garden View Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bobby Norman

Bobby Ray Norman, 74, of Sylva’s Ochre Hill community died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Douglas Nursing Center in Milam, Tenn., after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Robert Blanton and Johnny Norris officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. He worked for several years at a car manufactory in Michigan and retired from Lea Industries in Waynesville. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division, and a member of Ochre Hill Baptist Church. He was a son of the late David and Mary Etta Crawford Norman.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Bumgarner and Mammie Blanton; and two brothers, Gerson and Grady Norman.

Surviving are one sister, Betty Sutton of Hendersonville; and one brother, Tommy Norman of Franklin.
