Roberta Norman
Roberta Gentry Norman, 72, of Rabbit Creek Road, Balsam, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 7, at Balsam Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Cecil Saunders and Johnny Swanger officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Chuck Keefer, Greg Norman, Barry Blanton, Steve Beck, Brian McMahan and Bobby Cogdill.
A native of Transylvania County, she lived in Jackson County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late D.M. and Nellie Wood Gentry.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Charles Norman; one daughter, Nancy Keefer of Balsam; one son, Eddie Norman of Balsam; two brothers, Junior Gentry and Robert Gentry, both of Balsam; one sister, Visita Woods of Balsam; and nine grandchildren.

Lyda Burch
Lyda Burch, 70, of Live Oak Drive, Sylva, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Tommy Ashe, David Burch and Joe Burch officiated. Burial was in Burch Cemetery. Pallbearers were Harvey Bumgarner, Ernest Franks, Jim Mull, Shane Burch, David Burch Jr. and Dennis Burch.
He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. He also lived in High Point for a number of years, where he worked in a furniture factory. Son of the late Delous Burch and Matilda Mace Burch Shuler, he retired from Jackson County Solid Waste in landfill demolition and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; one brother, Verlin; and an infant sister.
Surviving are his wife, Deloise Middleton Burch; two daughters, Pat Moran and Debbie Fisher, both of Martin, Ga.; three stepdaughters, Annetta Mull of Glenville, Teresa Bumgarner of Georgetown, S.C., and Revonda Corbin of New Bern; one son, Delous Burch of Sylva; one sister, Bessie Johnson of Salisbury; four brothers, Ernest Burch, Jimmy Burch, and the Revs. Joe Burch and David Burch, all of Sylva; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Barbara Catt
Barbara Jumper Catt, 45, of Cherokee’s Blue Wing community died Thursday, June 3, 2004.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Cherokee Church of God, of which she was a member. The Revs. Donald Bates and A.J. Skelton officiated. Burial was in Laurel Bush Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Anthony Shell, Tim Junaluska, Randy Catt, Eddie Catt, Mike and Buddy Siweumptewa and Billy Jumper.
A native of Cherokee, she was a daughter of Stancil Jumper Jr. and Lillian Toineeta Jumper, both of Cherokee.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, William Douglas Catt Sr.; three daughters, Remy, Stephanie and Mattie Catt, all of Cherokee; two sons, Jeffery Catt of Fort Dix, N.J., and William Catt Jr. of Cherokee; two sisters, Tammy Gibby of Cullowhee and Linda Jumper of Cherokee; and eight grandchildren.

Thelma Wykle Hodgins, 67, of Webster Estates, Sylva, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
Private service and burial will be held at a later date.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she retired from Western Carolina University in food service and was a member of Locust Field Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Nelson and Lillie McMahan Wykle.
Surviving are one daughter, Donna Stephens of Cullowhee; one son, Eddie Hodgins of Dillsboro; three sisters, Mildred Cabe, Juanita Bradley and Hester Wykle, all of Sylva; and two grandchildren.

Walter Bradley
Walter “Biddy” Andrew Bradley Sr., 49, of Big Cove Road, Cherokee, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Big Cove Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Bo Parris and James Sneed officiated. Burial was in Bradley Family Cemetery at Galimore.
A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, he worked at the Cherokee Trout Farm before his health failed. He was a son of the late Henry and Helen Reed Bradley.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond Bradley, James Bradley and Don Bradley.
Surviving are four sons, Roland, Andrew, Calvin and Walter Bradley Jr., all of Cherokee; one sister, Carol Bradley of Cherokee; and two brothers, Robert Reed and Morgan Bradley, both of Cherokee.

Keith Bowers
Keith Aaron Bowers, 47, of Bryson City, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at his residence.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, he was a heavy equipment operator for many years.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Cora Lee Bowers; one sister, Alda Maney; and two brothers, Nelson Jones and Bill Edwards.
Surviving are his father, Bob Bowers of Bryson City; one daughter, Angela Bowers of Bryson City; one son, Kristopher Bowers of Sylva; two brothers, Lyle Edwards and Arville Bowers, both of Bryson City; and two sisters, Helen Woodard and Judith Parris, both of Bryson City.

Geneva Wilson
Geneva Moss Wilson, 70, of Sylva, formerly of Franklin, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Skyland Care Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 4, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The Revs. Nathan Moss and Charles Dean officiated. Burial was in Rush Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Moss, Robert Moss, Steve Moss, Wayne Moss, Jim Ball and Max Gladwell.
A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Lyman Moss and Mamie Gladwell Moss. She was former owner and operator for 25 years of West’s Florist in Franklin. She was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Gus Moss.
Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Harold Wilson; and two brothers, James Moss of Cashiers and John Moss of Manassas, Va.

Ruth Mitchell
Ruth Mitchell, 74, of Linestone Drive, Franklin, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Kensington, N.H.
A former resident of Kensington, she lived the past several years in Macon County. Daughter of the late Ernest and Annie Delong Mitchell, she retired from Eastern Airlines.
Surviving are a sister, Marion Mitchell of Franklin; and two brothers in California.

Ada Martin
Ada Woodard Martin, 92, of Sunrise Park, Sylva, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at her home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Wilkesdale Baptist Church, of which she was a member and Sunday school teacher. The Revs. Terry Jenkins and Dennis Burrell officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Sam Clemmons, Jeff Jones, Jim Buchanan, Paul Painter, Tommy Fincannon and Keith Dean.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Nannie Ridley and Thomas Henry Woodard.
She was married to Charles “Pepper” Martin, who died in 1975.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara M. Harrill and Jackie Buchanan, both of Sylva; one sister, Edith Dillard Bryson of Waynesville; one brother, Charlie Woodard of Waynesville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Angela Harlan, 44, of Cherokee, died Sunday, June 6, 2004.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at Wrights Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Dan Lambert and James “Bo” Parris officiated. Burial was at the church cemetery.
A native of Swain County, she was a graduate of Cherokee High School and lived most of her life in Cherokee.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Harlan Sr.
Surviving are her mother, Vivian Harlan of Cherokee; one son, John Moses Harlan of Cherokee; three brothers, Eugene Harlan and John Harlan Jr., both of Cherokee, and James Harlan of Marble; and two sisters, Victoria Greenhagen and Lynne Harlan, both of Cherokee.

Lela Woods
Lela Belle Woodard Woods, 80, of Bryson City’s Governors Island community died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in a Swain County health care facility.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. The Revs. David Burch and Max Cochran will officiate. Burial will be in Holly Springs #2. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home.
A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Calvin and Flora Brendle Woodard. She was former secretary, Sunday school teacher, song leader and last surviving founding member of Governors Island Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Horace Woods, who died in 1978; three brothers, George, Burrell and Craig Woodard; and one sister, Lottie Greene.
Surviving are one son, Eugene Carroll Woods of Dillsboro; four sisters, Nancey Brooks of Clyde, Dorothy Dyer of Whittier, Dally Saunders of Sylva and Elisa Barker of Bryson City; one brother, Bill Woodard of Bryson City; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren. |
