Herald’s NIE initiative launches kids’ feature

By Lynn Hotaling

Parents who are wondering how to keep their children’s reading skills sharp now that school is closed need to look no further than page 3C of this week’s newspaper.

The Sylva Herald’s Newspaper in Education initiative’s new kids’ feature, Summer Smarts, spotlights reading opportunities available in Jackson County during vacation months and provides a short informational feature story aimed at younger readers.

Summer Smarts also includes a “featured reader” who shares information and descriptions of favorite books.

The Herald announced its NIE affiliation in March and aims its educational efforts at providing learning experiences parents and children can share at home.

Local school officials offered input into the newspaper’s Summer Smarts feature.

Herald reporter Carey King, a former teacher, coordinates the newspaper’s NIE effort.
