Dillsboro receives Duke money
With the key to the Monteith house in one hand and a $50,000 check from Duke Power Co. in the other, Dillsboro Mayor Jean Hartbarger, center, talks with board members about potential uses for the property. Board members signed a 10-year, $112,000-loan with BB&T on April 14 to purchase the house and 16 acres from Edna Monteith’s estate. Duke’s check will be used to assist with the town’s planned heritage development on the Monteith property, which will include a performing arts center with an amphitheater, picnic shelter with horseshoe pits, playground, sand volleyball court and parking lots. Board members learned this week that they will also receive a $250,000 grant from the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund to assist with the project.
