‘Safe haven’

Amanda McFalls of Tuckasegee took third place in The Sylva Herald’s annual Mountain Spring photo contest with this April shot of a bird’s nest and eggs she captured in her bean patch and titled “Safe Haven.” Judged by Herald Advertising Manager Margo Gray and coordinated by Herald graphic designer Nick Breedlove, this year’s competition generated a record-setting 106 entries. Additional contest winners are Tracey Grant of Cullowhee, grand prize; Phyllis Jarvinen of Webster, first; Christy Taylor of Whittier, second; and Jean Kirkland of Sylva, honorable mention. In the “Cute Kids” category, winners are Brandy McCardle of Sylva, first; Linda Vinson of Honea Path, S.C., second; and Kayla Sloan of Sylva, third.
