Vehicle search leads to multiple drug charges

An illegible license tag prompted Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy Scottie Holder to stop a motorist on N.C. 107, and subsequently charge him on several drug counts Monday (May 31).

Following a search of the 1991 blue Ford Mustang, several narcotics were found inside, including 2.8 ounces of crystal methamphetamine, according to  Holder.

Narcotics seized during a vehicle search Monday (May 31) included 2.8 ounces of crystal meth which led to the arrest of 37-year-old Derrick Ray Potts of Highlands.

He arrested and charged Derrick Ray Potts, 37, of Highlands with possession of crystal meth, possession with intent to sell and deliver same, maintaining a vehicle for the sale and delivery, trafficking in crystal meth, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and simple possession of schedule IV.

Potts remains in Jackson County Jail under a $20,000 bond and awaits a June 8 court date.
