Wilma Ashe
Wilma Aileen McHan Ashe, 90, of Bryson City, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, in a Swain County care center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Bryson City United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Russell officiated. Burial followed in the Whittier Cemetery.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Swain County and daughter of the late Noah Robert and Eva Summerow McHan. She was a member of Bryson City United Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher and youth choir director. She was employed for 24 years as the food service manager for Carson-Newman College, Lees-McRae College and UNC-Greensboro. She was the last surviving charter member of Western North Carolina Associated Communities and was active in Swain County politics.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Reid Ashe; two brothers, Vernon and Glen McHan; and one sister, Madge Ramsey.
Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Maupin of Dandridge, Tenn., and Donna Walters of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Crawford
Mary Louise “Boots” Crawford, 76, of Cullowhee, died Friday, May 28, 2004, in a Sylva care center. Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Joe Yelton officiated. Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
She was born in Haywood County, but lived most of her life in Cullowhee. Daughter of the late John Edgar and Jeanette Mehaffey Crawford, she attended Cullowhee Baptist Church.
Surviving are two brothers, William Robert Crawford of Waynesville and John Cecil Crawford of Charlestown, Ind.; and one sister, Joan Crawford Haskett of Mills River.

John Toineeta
John Ernest Toineeta, 51, of Jamestown, Pa., formerly of Cherokee, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Easton Nursing Center after an extended illness.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 30, at Toineeta Family Cemetery. The Rev. Bo Parris officiated.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a steelworker and pipe fitter. He was a son of the late Tiney Smith Toineeta.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Toineeta.
Surviving are his father, George Howard Toineeta of Cherokee; one daughter, Tonya Long of Pennsylvania; two sons, Jesse of Pennsylvania and Tony of Florida; seven sisters, Barbara Toineeta, Brenda Toineeta, Gail Parker, Tiney Armachain and Georgia Toineeta, all of Cherokee, Frances Tahbonemah of Oklahoma and Patsy Toineeta of Franklin; five brothers, Jesse Toineeta, Charter Toineeta, Joe Toineeta, Shag Toineeta and Elrod Toineeta, all of Cherokee; and five grandchildren.

Glenn Palmer
Glenn Edward Palmer, Sr. 69, of Palm Springs, Fla., died unexpectedly Sunday, May 23, 2004.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1934, in Fulton County, Ga., and spent many years working as a dairy farmer in South Florida. Later he was employed in the irrigation business and most recently, before his retirement, he worked as a chef at Mountain Trace Nursing Center in Sylva. He returned to Florida after his wife, Marita Joyce, Palmer, died in 2001.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
Surviving are two sons, Glenn E. Palmer, Jr. and David G. Palmer; three daughters, Susan L. Falsia Bazauri, Cheryl A. Palmer-Kuran and Tamra P. Gill; twin sisters, Joan and Joann; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Thelma Hodgins
Thelma Margaret Hodgins, 67, of Sylva, died at Harris Regional Hospital on Tuesday, June 1, 2004.

Sarah Spangenberg
Sarah E. Spangenberg of Banjo Lane, Whittier, formerly of Lake Ariel, Pa., died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the home of her son in Whittier.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, in the Elmhurst Presbyterian Church. Her nephew, the Rev. John Craig, pastor of the Bidwell Hill and the Grace United Methodist churches, officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
She was the widow of Samuel M. Spangenberg, who died in 1980. Born in Scranton, Pa., daughter of the late James and Maryanne Smithard Padfield, she was a member of Elmhurst Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star in New Jersey, where she held several offices with the organization.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Robert, Stanley, and James; and three sisters, Jane Chase, Elizabeth Edwards, and Florence Wegge.
Surviving are one son, Samuel Spangenberg of Whittier; one sister, Dollathy Barnes of Connecticut; two grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Bert Moses
William Bert Moses, 99, of Sylva’s Cope Creek community, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, at East Sylva Baptist Church. The Revs. Charles Dean, Johnny Swanger and Jim Dean officiated. Burial was held at Wike Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, and honorary pallbearers were deacons.
A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he worked for 10 years in Macon County and moved back to Jackson County to work with Blackwood Lumber Co. During the Depression he worked with TVA at several area dams. He worked for Champion Paper Co. building logging roads. After retirement, he volunteered at Harris Regional Hospital for 15 years and delivered Meals on Wheels for several years.
From age 85-95 he participated in the N.C. State Senior Games, winning many medals and holding the state record in most categories. His specialty was the 1500-meter walk. He carried the torch in the opening ceremonies of the Raleigh games and was one of the top 10 in the U.S. representatives for Senior Games.
He was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church, where he was a deacon for more than 60 years, a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. He was a son of the late Charlie and Jane Buchanan Moses.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Leona Stewart Moses, who died in 1984; and three daughters, Kitty Rae Crowe, Betty Moses and Carol Dean Moses.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley Hurwitz of Rockeville, Md.; five sons, Charles Moses, James Doug Moses and Harry Moses, all of Sylva, Harold Moses of Asheville and Eddie Moses of Hendersonville; one sister, Jessie Ashe of Suffolk, Va.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Walter Hmielewski
Walter Charles Hmielewski, 78, of Kissimmee, Fla., died Saturday, May 22, 2004.
Visitation and a rosary were held on the evening before his funeral mass, which was Wednesday, May 26, at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in St. Cloud, Fla. Burial was at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving are seven sons, David of Townsend, Tenn., James of Nashville, Tenn., Mike of Macon, Ga., Tim of Tamarac, Fla., Rick of Cooper City, Fla., John and Thorinton of Cape Coral, Fla.; three daughters, Susan Karcher of Webster, Cindy Nixon of Cookeville, Tenn., and Joyelan Hmielewski of Cape Coral; 22 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Thomas Smathers
Thomas Edward Smathers, 55, of Glenville, died unexpectedly Monday, May 31, 2004, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 4, at Hamburg Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Paul Carden will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Moody Funeral Home. Burial will be at Hamburg Cemetery.
He was a native of Haywood County and was a graduate of the first graduation class of Tuscola High School in 1967. He retired as an N.C. State Highway Patrolman in 1983.
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Smathers.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Littrell Smathers; one daughter, Stephanie Smathers of the home; one son, Thomas Edward Smathers, Jr., also of the home; his mother, Betty Jean Smathers of Waynesville; and two sisters, Kathy Weatherman and Patricia Carswell, both of Waynesville.
