Hollis Cole
Hollis Burton Cole, 97, of Whittier’s Union Hill community died Sunday, May 23, 2004, in Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Patterson Chapel Baptist Church. The Revs. Ray Lambert and Perry Cole officiated. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery.
A son of the late Dan and Cora Lee Blankenship Cole, he was born in the Big Cove section of Swain County on June 2, 1906. He was a logger, construction worker and farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He married Gertrude Beatrice Martin in 1927 and she died in 1987.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Lucille Cole Bryson; and one son, who died at birth.
Surviving are two daughters, Mable L. Cole of the home and Ruby “Bobbie” Lee Cole Painter of Thomasville; one brother, Willis Cole of Linville Falls; one sister, Velma Roper of Baltimore; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Bonnie Keener
Bonnie Mae Anthony Keener, 91, of Kudzu Lane, Whittier, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 24, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Jamison officiated. Burial was in Thomas Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Keener, David Hyatt, Wayne Keener, Edwin Crisp, Dennis Ensley and Troy Keener.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late William and Mary Hoyle Anthony.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard and Obed Anthony; two sisters, Fannie Ensley and Essie Crisp; and two infant siblings.
Surviving is her husband, James P. Keener, who she married Dec. 17, 1955.
Douglas Moody
Douglas Phillip Moody, 67, of Whittier’s Qualla community, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 23, at Olivet United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Mike Moore officiated. Burial was in Sherrill Cemetery.
A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Ned and Edna McCloud Moody. He lived in Jackson County for the past 25 years.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Peggy Pechke.
Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline Bradley Moody; four sons, Douglas Phillip Moody Jr. of Athens, Ga., Charles Hyatt Moody of Waynesville, William “Josh” Washington and Robert Washington, both of Cherokee; two daughters, Frances Skinner of Italy and Georganne French of Cherokee; one sister, Marlene Moody Blalock of Maggie Valley; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Miles Calhoun
Miles Thomas Calhoun Jr., 83, of Falls Circle, Sylva, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at Sylva First Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Wayne Hill and Ed Beddingfield officiated. Burial was at Swain Memorial Park in Bryson City. Pallbearers were Sam Beck, Ken Calhoun II, Eric Dixon, Mike Bridges, Lynn Dickey and Keith Tipton. Honorary pallbearers were Porter Hall, Frank Crawford, Bud Plemmons, Ray McMillan, Clyde Vance, Kenneth Revis and Jack Farmer.
He was a native of Swain County and lived in Jackson County since 1944. Son of the late Miles T. and Clora Laney Calhoun Sr., he was retired from the Sylva Volunteer Fire Department and Mead Corp.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Grace C. Calhoun; one son, Kenneth Calhoun of Hendersonville; two daughters, Carolyn Stephenson of Charlotte and Judy Calhoun of Sylva; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Germaine “Gerrie” W. Long, of Cullowhee’s Norton community, died at her home on May 20, 2004. She was a resident of Norton for 35 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Jill L. Noha and Sidney Paige Long; one son, Curtis R. Long; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Moore
Mary Lou Moore, 72, of Racking Cove Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral service were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Sylva First Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Wayne Hill officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Garland and Amy Thompson Jones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Moore; and one brother, Col. Phillip A. Jones.
Surviving are four nieces and five nephews.

Pauline Jenkins
Pauline Browning Jenkins, 93, of Sylva, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at her residence following a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 24, at Sylva First United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Paul Christy officiated. Burial was at Cane Creek Cemetery in Fairview.
She was a native of Washington County, Tenn., and had been a resident of Sylva for the past 10 years. Daughter of the late Rev. William and Anna Moore Browning, she was a legal secretary for her late husband, Ted Jenkins’ legal practice in Robbinsville.
Surviving are her two daughters, Anna Jenkins Ginn of Webster and Joy Carol Carter of Morganton; three sons, Robert N. Luther of Huntsville, Ala., William B. Luther of Panama City, Fla., and Gene D. Robinson, Sr. of Harrisonburg, Va.; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Doris Hagan
Doris Wilma Taylor Hagan, 69, of Clemmons, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Graveside services were held 2 p.m. Monday, May 24, at Westlawn Cemetery in Clemmons.
She was born May 25, 1934, in Jackson County to Claude and Alice Pressley Taylor. She was employed with Sara Lee.
Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Hagan; two sons, Charles Keith Hagan of Lewisville and Mark Kelvin Hagan of Clemmons; one daughter, Wilma Kay Bricolo of Clemmons; her mother, Alice Pressley Taylor of Cullowhee; three sisters, Mary Holder of Clemmons, Jo Scott of Asheville and Christine Fisher of Cullowhee; three brothers, Wayne Taylor of Brevard, Terry Taylor of Sylva, and Steve Taylor of Tobaccoville; and 11 grandchildren.
Edgar Hooper
Edgar N. Hooper of Hartselle, Ala., died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Hartselle Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Moses Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Robert Fernandez officiated. Burial was in Lower Stephens Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, he was an N.C. Highway Patrol trooper for 27 years and worked at Western Carolina University with the campus police. He was the son of the late Henry Newell and Flossie Woods Hooper.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Pearl Cook Hooper, who died in 2002; one brother, Lane Hooper; and one sister, Kathleen Hooper.
Surviving are one son, Kevin Hooper of Hartselle; one sister, Leota Seago of Sylva; one grandson; and one great-grandchild.

Sarah Spangenberg of Banjo Lane, Whittier, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at her residence.

Helen Deitz
Helen Marie DeHart Deitz, 83, of Sylva, died Monday, May 24, 2004, in Winston-Salem after a period of declining health.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at East Sylva Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Charles Dean and Jack Hutchins will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A native of Swain County, she was a member of the Webster Homemaker Extension Club. She was a daughter of the late Will D. and Hattie Burnette DeHart.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie T. Deitz.
Surviving are two sons, Donald Deitz of Bryson City and Ronald Deitz of Winston-Salem; one brother, Eugene DeHart of Armuchee, Ga.; three sisters, Catherine Sawyer of Bryson City, Dorothy Lee Holland of Sylva and Cora Mae Younger of Danville, Va.; and one grandchild.
