County’s high schools plan commencement exercises

Jackson County’s three public high schools will present 215 candidates for graduation during separate commencement exercises during the coming week. School principals, along with Superintendent Sue Nations, will award diplomas to this year’s graduates.

The Jackson County School of Alternatives will hold its graduation Friday, May 28, at 7 p.m. in Western Carolina University’s Hoey Auditorium; Smoky Mountain High School seniors will collect their diplomas during a 7 p.m. ceremony Monday, May 31, in WCU’s Ramsey Center; and Blue Ridge’s graduation will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 3, in the school gymnasium.

SMHS, the county’s largest school, has 195 students expected to graduate, said Margaret Massie, senior counselor. Fifteen are expected to receive diplomas at Blue Ridge, and the School of Alternatives anticipates awarding five diplomas this year.

Smoky Mountain

The Rev. Paul Christy, pastor of Sylva First United Methodist Church, will address this year’s senior class. He will be introduced by Ollin Dunford, senior class vice president.

Student speakers will include Keri Upson, valedictorian, and Josh Lord, salutatorian; Justin Jamison, senior class president; and Tyler Melton, student council president.

Polly Rudoff, senior class treasurer, will welcome guests to the ceremony, and Jolene Jurss, senior class photographer, will give the slide show presentation.

Assistant Principal Jay Grissom and instructional specialist Mary Anne Barker will present the candidates for graduation. Diplomas will be awarded by Principal Alex Bell and Superintendent Nations, and Bell will issue the declaration of graduation.

Blue Ridge

Blue Ridge Spanish teacher Rick Plotts will address this year’s graduates. Student speakers will be Carey Bradley, valedictorian, and J.C. Molet, salutatorian. William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104 will present the colors, and senior Brittany Hoxit will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

English teacher Dianne Gholson will give the welcome, and Principal Roy Douthitt will deliver the charge to the graduates.

Barbie Holden will play the processional and recessional, and scholarships will be presented by counselor Shirley Maxson.

Diplomas will be awarded by Douthitt and Nations with Douthitt conferring degrees.

Blue Ridge candidates for graduation are Carey Leigh Bradley, Genna Carlene Bryson, Sarah Jillian Dickerson, James Mathew Dillard, Kelli Nicole Flynn, Brittany Nicole Hoxit, George Robert Mansur, Jesus Magana Mendez, James Christopher Molet, Michael Andy Montanez, Sarah Jo Morgan, Ashley Raigh Phillips, Angel Lynn Rogers, Joseph Cyler Smiley and Brittany Ann Smith.

Jackson County

School of Alternatives

All five candidates for graduation will speak during the School of Alternatives commencement exercises.

Principal Lynn Dillard and program directors will present the candidates, and Superintendent Nations and school board member Nathan Moss will award diplomas.

Candidates for graduation are William Adam Hicks, Matthew Levi Queen, Johnnie Keith Smathers, Kala Jerome Teague and Shawn Dwight Wilson.

The School of Alternatives’ eighth-grade promotion will be held in conjunction with the schools commencement exercises.
