Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Mildred Harker

Mildred Bennett Harker, 80, of Franklin, formerly of Sylva, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, in a Macon County hospital.

Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The Revs. Jerome Hamm and Phil Williams officiated. Burial was in Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Proctor, she was the daughter of the late James Tine Bennett and Mary Hall Bennett. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church and was a member of the Nequassa Chapter 43 of the Eastern Star.  She was a former employee of Jackson County Bank.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary K. Shuford, who died in 2000; and one brother, Harry Bennett.

Surviving are her husband, Fred Harker; one daughter, Joan Bennett Stearns of Sylva; and one granddaughter.


Cora Painter

Cora Mathis Painter, 103, 1837 East Poinsett Street, Greer, S.C., died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 in Allen Bennett Hospital.

A native of Sylva’s Addie community, she would have been 104 in July. Daughter of the late D.A. and Belle Norman Mathis, she was a homemaker and a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Dillard Mathis and Elbert Mathis.

Surviving are three sons, Jack Painter of Greer, Glen Painter of Wellford, S.C., and Frank Painter of the home; one daughter, Judy Painter of Greer; one sister, Eva Frady of Sylva; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Buff Creek Cemetery Fund, Sylva, NC 28779.

Georgia Ensley

Georgia Wilkey Ensley, 85, of Dillsboro, died Friday, May 14, 2004, in a Sylva care center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Long Branch Baptist Church. The Rev. Bo Brown officiated. Burial followed at Robinson Cemetery.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and was a charter member of Long Branch Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late George and Elsie Fowler Wilkey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Ensley Jr.; two sons, James H. and Johnny E. Ensley; and two brothers, Marshall and Charles Wilkey.

Surviving are one brother, Harold Wilkey of Sylva; one sister, Irene Wilkey of Sylva; three grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Unit, Mountain Trace Nursing Center, 417 Mountain Trace Road, Sylva, NC 28779.

Gwendolyn Shell

Gwendolyn Woodard Shell, 53, of Cherokee’s Birdtown community, died Friday, May 14, 2004, in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 17, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. The Rev. Roland Whitaker officiated. Burial was in Drama Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of Hildred Wright Woodard of Canton and the late Robert Woodard, who died in 1997. She was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Couney Shell; one daughter, Katie Fields of Branson, Mich.; one son, Joey Farmer of Mills River; one sister, Carolyn Wilson of Canton; and four grandchildren .

Mary Moore

Mary Lou Moore, 72, of Racking Cove Road, Sylva, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, in Harris Regional Hospital.
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Joyce Strickland

Joyce Strickland, 49, of Dicks Creek community, Whittier, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 9, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 14, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Johnny Norris officiated. Burial followed at 2 p.m. at Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

A native of Newport News, Va., she lived in Jackson County since September 2003. She was a U.S. Army veteran.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one stepson.

Surviving are her husband of 17 years, Roger G. Strickland; two daughters, Kimberly Strickland of the home and Connie Gunnells of Central; one stepdaughter, Cindy Dawn Donal of Seneca, S.C.; two sons, Chris Gunnells of Whittier and Lewis Gunnells of Weaverville; and two stepsons, Scott Strickland of Anderson, S.C., and Brad Strickland of Florence, S.C.

Memorials may be made to the Kimberly Strickland Education Fund.

Fred Bigwitch

Fred Allen Bigwitch, 49, of Cherokee’s Wolfetown community, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Cherokee Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 14, at The Church of God. The Revs. James “Bo” Parris and George Polecat of Oklahoma officiating. Burial was in Bigwitch Cemetery.

Son of the late Fred Bigwitch, he was born Sept. 14, 1954.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Stacy Bigwitch and Marie Armachain; and two brothers, James Bigwitch and Robert Bigwitch.

Surviving are his mother, Eva Bigwitch; one daughter, Chelsea Bigwitch Ledford; three brothers, Richard, Charlie and Isaac Bigwitch, all of Cherokee; two sisters, Peggy Littlejohn and Lucy Teesateskie, both of Cherokee.

 Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Davis George

Davis George, 76, of Cherokee’s Bigwitch community died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral service were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at Bigwitch Baptist Church. The Revs. James Sneed, James “Bo” Parris and John West officiated. Burial was in Twister Littlejohn Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Elijah and Nicey Wilnoty George. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, and was the husband of the late Betty Crowe George.

Surviving are three daughters, Glenda Crowe, Donnette Lossiah and Aubry Bigmeat, all of Cherokee; one son, Don Crowe of Cherokee; one stepdaughter, Katherine Verran of Grapevine, Texas; one stepson, Charles Albert Crowe of Morganton; one sister, Encie Littlejohn of Cherokee; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Christine Hooper

Christine Robinson Hooper, 86, of Cashiers, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Cashiers Baptist Church. The Revs. Art Fowler and J.C. Robinson officiated. Burial was at Hamburg Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Cashiers Baptist Church and former owner and operator of Hooper’s Grocery Store in Cashiers. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Dennis and Daisy Alexander Robinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Charles William Hooper Sr., who died July 1, 2003.

Surviving are one son, Charles William Hooper Jr. of Cashiers; two daughters, Harriet Bruno of Gurley, Ala., and Kimberly Mendenhall of Cashiers; five grandchildren; and great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Hamburg Cemetery Fund, 4673 N.C. 107 N., Glenville, NC 28736.

Julius Kitchin

Julius H. Kitchin, 91, of Warren, Ohio, died Friday, May 14, 2004, in Community Skilled Nursing Home in Warren following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Champion Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Paul A. Gaug officiated. Burial was in Champion Twp. Cemetery, Warren.

Son of the late Hester and Laura Hooper Kitchin, he was a native of Sylva. He graduated from Sylva High School and was employed with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 225. He owned and operated Julius Kitchin Real Estate. He was a member of Champion Presbyterian Church, a 32nd degree Mason, and a Champion VIP.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Ray Kitchin, who died in 2001; one daughter, Sheila Thompson; four brothers; and five sisters.

Surviving are one son, Edward Kitchin of Southington, Ohio; two daughters, Hilda Middleton and Linda Haines, both of Champion, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials maybe made to Champion Presbyterian Church.

Carl Hall Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Lucy Fisher

Lucy Parker Fisher, 84, of Fisher Creek Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, in a Sylva care center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Michael Farmer will officiate. Burial will follow at Dills Cemetery on Fisher Creek. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a former employee of Skyland Textile. She was a daughter of the late John Milas and Charlotte Rebecca Aiken Parker.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Josephine Cooke, Bessie Mae Blackburn and Arbie Penland; and three brothers, Verlin Parker, Fred Parker and J.C. Aiken.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Joe Clyde Fisher; two daughters, Betty Fisher Barnes of Sylva and Mary Fisher  Mason of Dacula, Ga.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Frances Wolfe

Frances Bernice Wolfe, 64, of Cherokee, died Sunday, May 16, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 21, at Straight Fork Baptist Church. The Revs. Charles Ray Ball and James “Bo” Parris will officiate. Burial will be in the family cemetery. Nephews Marvin Wolfe, Melvin Wolfe, William Nathaniel Wolfe Jr., Jeff Crowe, Jack Smith, Will Welch, Kevin Welch, James William Crowe and Paul Hornbuckle will serve as pallbearers. The body will be taken to the church today (Thursday) to await the service hour.

She was a daughter of the late William Wallace and Mary Ann Tooni Wolfe.

Surviving are one son, Allen Groenewold of Whittier; one daughter, Alice Groenewold of Cherokee; six sisters, Geraldine Welch, Emily Smith, Carmen Rosillo-Perez, Hazel Howell, Velma Taylor and Donna Wolfe, all of Cherokee; one brother, William Wolfe of Cherokee; and six grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
